It will surprise no one that we believe philanthropy has to play a much bigger role in carbon removal. Like, right now. Thanks to MCJ Collective for giving our very own Adam Fraser the proverbial mic to go deep on this topic we really (really) care about.

How much of global philanthropic giving do you think goes towards climate-related causes? 🤔 Answer: 2% In this week's newsletter, Adam Fraser, CEO of Terraset, highlights this critical yet overlooked fact. Even in the US, this figure improves to just 3%. Why does philanthropy matter to climate solutions? 💰 The CDR market remains underfunded despite its importance 📈 Philanthropic dollars can drive development and scaling of CDR projects 🌱 Investment is needed now for early-stage climate solutions to mature With a philanthropic market nearing $1 trillion, directing more funds towards climate initiatives is not just necessary— Adam argues it's imperative.

We can’t get over the fact that only 2% of global philanthropy goes to climate causes. And for carbon removal? Just 2% of that. It’s a huge missed opportunity for all those hoping to tackle the climate crisis. As we gear up for Climate Week NYC, it’s a good time to talk about how philanthropy isn’t just a nice-to-have in the climate fight—it’s critical. The global philanthropic market is approaching $1 trillion. Imagine what we could do if more of that went into carbon removal. https://lnkd.in/g_8dTWza

If you’re familiar with direct air capture (and if you’re following us, the chances are high!) then you almost certainly know about Climeworks. They’ve been at the forefront of the DAC industry since 2009 when they first captured CO2 from the air under lab conditions at ETH Zürich. Today, we’re making our first purchase from Climeworks. Familiar with the name but not the technology? Climeworks captures CO2 from ambient air using modular CO2 collectors that run exclusively on clean energy. Once the filter material inside the collectors is saturated with CO2, it is heated to release the CO2 for long-term storage. They launched the world’s first commercial DAC facility with storage in 2021, Orca, and recently increased their removal capacity with the inauguration of their second facility, Mammoth, in May. They were named one of TIME's 100 Most Influential Companies of 2024 and plan to develop one of the first DAC hubs supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Regional DAC Hubs program.

Great day for us, bad day for carbon in the atmosphere. Big welcome to Taylor Insley, our new Director of Strategic Growth!

When you do reference checks at the end of a search process, you often get generic answers. Yep, they worked here and did a good job. No, they didn't steal anyone's lunch from the office refrigerator (that we know of). Yep, those dates are accurate. Good luck! Sometimes, though, those calls make you feel like the hiring process has gone perfectly to plan. When we decided to offer Taylor Insley the role of Director of Strategic Growth for Terraset I picked up the phone to her first reference. Before I had asked a single question, they opened with: "Obviously you should hire Taylor." The immediate and wholehearted appreciation of her skills, her personality and her values in that conversation was so genuine - and it echoed and reinforced what we'd seen throughout the interview process. Why do we think she's the right person to help multiply the amount of philanthropic capital we are driving into carbon removal? Her passion for the future of the planet is obvious, from starting her career in the field developing red mangrove restoration projects in the Dominican Republic, to most recently leading fundraising and impact strategy for Conservation X Labs. She’s a strategic thinker with a growth mindset and an ability to execute and hustle. Those qualities don't often come in the same package, but we could see them all in her work. The growing momentum and fast-paced developments we’re seeing at Terraset and in CDR demand curiosity, flexibility, grit and grind, and each of those characteristics shone through. And the pressing need to scale CDR—to thousands of times today's levels—means that storytelling, fundraising, partnership building and an ability to spot opportunities for catalytic growth are crucial. Taylor has the skills we need, and we can't wait to see them in action. Welcome to Terraset, Taylor!

We 10x'd our carbon removal fundraising goal in 1 month 🎉 In June, Wren set out to raise $10,000 in matched donations to support Charm Industrial. Instead, we crushed that goal and raised over $𝟭𝟭𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 from thousands of Wren subscribers, business customers, and one-time donors! That total will be 100% matched, resulting in twice as many carbon removal credits being purchased from Charm Industrial, the world's leading carbon removal operator. Huge thanks to our donors, as well as Terraset for facilitating the matching campaign, and to our friend Sebastian Smith at Charm Industrial.

Looking forward to speaking (about how we unlock more #CDR buyers) at Carbon Unbound West Coast, October 24-25 in San Francisco. The summit will bring together CDR leaders and experts with a focus on achieving a collective mission: one gigaton of carbon removed from Earth's atmosphere. Which, as anyone at Terraset will tell you, is going to take a lot of work to achieve and will still only be a first step in where we need to go. (Also, credit to the Carbon Unbound team for leading their main speaker announcement yesterday with a focus on the pioneering women driving this space forward. Great to see.) Ever heard of carbon casting? We hadn't until we met Graphyte - the latest addition to our CDR portfolio. Today, almost all carbon contained in waste biomass residues is re-emitted into the atmosphere when it’s burned or decomposed. Graphyte’s Carbon Casting process dries and compresses biomass into stable “carbon blocks,” halting biomass decomposition by lowering the moisture content to a point below which microbes cannot survive. If you've never called a block of carbon “state of the art” before, now may be the time. Graphyte are backed by Breakthrough Energy and have secured an offtake agreement for 10,000 tonnes from American Airlines and been named a semi-finalist in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Pilot Purchase Prize. Excited to diversify our portfolio of CDR projects with Graphyte’s new approach!

Isometric today announced partnerships with 12 of the most important platforms in carbon removal. Patch, Watershed, Supercritical, Klimate.co, Carbonx Climate, Milkywire, Carbonplace, Wren, Rubicon Carbon, Cloverly and CEEZER have all partnered with Isometric to provide their end customers access to Isometric’s high quality carbon credits. Terraset is also providing a way for people to fund carbon removal through tax-deductible donations. These partners are already helping thousands of companies take action to reduce their carbon footprints and decarbonize. It’s critically important that those companies now begin to incorporate high quality carbon removal credits into their sustainability plans. By partnering with Isometric, these platforms can now offer buyers of all sizes the ability to secure credits certified against Isometric's scientifically rigorous protocols. In addition to the 12 platforms mentioned, other organizations are also leveraging key data from the Isometric Registry. Frontier, AlliedOffsets and CDR.fyi are all improving their offerings by integrating Isometric’s data. To support these partnerships, Isometric has launched an Application Programming Interface (API) for the distribution and management of its high quality carbon credits. Isometric’s Registry and MRV APIs allow users to seamlessly manage, transfer and retire credits in real-time. Broadening access to high-quality credits through integrations like these can expand the type and number of buyers in the market, which is critical to scaling the CDR industry.
