We welcomed NIH Distinguished Investigator Alan Sher, PhD, from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) this week. What an honor, what a career! His studies on the immunology of infection built a foundation for #immunity & #infection research. Sher is pictured with Chrissy Leopold Wager, PhD & Dr. Larry Schlesinger, CEO, both of Texas Biomed. #niaid #infection

Eradicating Infectious Disease
About us
Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed) is one of the world's leading independent biomedical research institutions dedicated to advancing health worldwide through innovative biomedical research. Texas Biomed, formerly the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, partners with hundreds of researchers and institutions around the world, targeting advances in the fight against cardiovascular disease, psychiatric disorders, Tuberculosis, AIDS, hepatitis, malaria, parasitic infections, Ebolavirus, Marburg virus and a host of other infectious diseases. The Institute is located on a 200-acre campus on the northwest side of San Antonio, Texas. Its staff of more than 300 employees includes a multidisciplinary team of doctoral-level scientists who lead more than 200 major research projects in the Institute's Scientific Programs; Host-Pathogen Interactions, Disease Intervention & Prevention and Population Health. Texas Biomed is the site of the Southwest National Primate Research Center and the world's largest colony of baboons for biomedical research, including a unique pedigreed colony of approximately 2,500 nonhuman primates. The Institute enjoys a distinguished history in the innovative, humane and appropriate use of nonhuman primates for biomedical research. The Institute also is home to the nation's only privately-owned biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) laboratory. This maximum containment lab allows for safe research on lethal pathogens for which there are no treatments or vaccines, including potential bio-terror agents and emerging diseases. The AT&T Genomics Computing Center houses the world's largest computer cluster for human genetic and genomic research. This high-performance computing facility allows scientists to search for disease-influencing genes at record speed. For more information on Texas Biomed, visit us at www.TxBiomed.org

It's one thing to tell you about the Valero Young Scientist Program at Texas Biomed, but it is another thing entirely to hear directly from the students who participated. Be sure to WATCH the short video at the end of this story to see what the students worked on and hear about their experiences in their own words. You'll also hear from Texas Biomed's Education Outreach Programs Director Rosemary Riggs, Ph.D. and the transformation she saw in the participants. #STEM #STEMeducation #SATX #Texas https://lnkd.in/g7yCfTEb

Today in #IAmTexasBiomed, meet Staff Scientist Eusondia Arnett, PhD, who studies #tuberculosis and directs Dr. Larry Schlesinger's lab at Texas Biomed. Our scientists work tirelessly to understand the fundamental mechanisms of our immune systems and of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens, in order to find better ways to prevent and treat infectious diseases. We applaud Sabin Vaccine Institute, the Rwandan government and their partners to quickly launch a clinical trial of Sabin's investigational #Marburg vaccine to help with the outbreak there. We are proud to have partnered with Sabin and Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) on early studies to help advance the vaccine to human trials. Seeing a vaccine candidate that has come through our labs helping in an emergency goes to the heart of our mission as an Institute -- eradicating the threat of infectious diseases. https://lnkd.in/g5xuhwvH

Members of the Texas Developmental-Center for AIDS Research (Texas D-CFAR) gathered at Texas Biomed and online today for a Mini Symposium to share ongoing #HIV research, ranging from vaccines and therapies to interactions with other diseases and substances. Texas D-CFAR aims to help end the HIV epidemic in Texas through research, community engagement and training the next generation of HIV researchers and clinicians. The Center is based at Baylor College of Medicine, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) and Texas Biomedical Research Institute. A key feature of the Center is providing opportunities to share research, exchange ideas and catalyze collaborations across #Texas. Great to have D-CFAR core leaders from all three institutes here today, including Jason Kimata, Thomas Giordano, Diane Santa Maria, Mahesh Mohan and Deepak Kaushal along with Texas Biomed President/CEO Larry Schlesinger. Dr. Giordano gave an overview of D-CFAR before the research presentations.

ICYMI: The full season of "Tom Slick, Mystery Hunter" - a dramatized podcast about Texas Biomed's founder Tom Slick, Jr. - is out now. The 8-episode series features Owen Wilson voicing Tom Slick and Sissy Spacek voicing his daughter. We are especially excited to highlight the final Fact v. Fiction episode, which reveals what the writers made up to weave an enthralling tale versus the real facts of Tom's life. The truth might surprise you! The episode features interviews with members of Tom's family -- niece/biographer Catherine Nixon Cooke and son Charles Slick -- as well as Texas Biomed President/CEO Larry Schlesinger and Southwest Research Institute President Adam Hamilton. We are delighted that the podcast is sharing Tom's enduring legacy on human health by investing in #science and establishing several research institutes here in #SanAntonio. Tom was not just a visionary with big ideas – he acted on them. He made them happen. We at Texas Biomed strive every day to continue in his footsteps. Enjoy the listen! #SATX #visionary https://lnkd.in/gwHcKrUe
