Katie Phillips is old enough to remember the dark ages—when nightfall at her family’s farm outside Coleman meant navigating by the shadowy illumination offered by carbide and coal-oil lamps and lanterns. When much of the work on her dad’s dairy farm—milking, separating and bottling—happened before sunrise and without the benefit of electricity. “It’s a hard life,” says Katie, who turns 97 next month. For her and her brother and two sisters growing up in the 1930s, there wasn’t much free time for fun, and before electricity, there was no reading or playing games at night.

While Dale Blasingame was waiting in the car line to enter Hamilton Pool Preserve in July 2014, a ranger walked over with bad news—the popular Hill Country swimming hole was full. Sensing his disappointment, the ranger suggested an alternative, nearby Pedernales Falls State Park. “Would you like a day pass or an annual pass?” A simple question at the entrance to Pedernales Falls prompted Blasingame to inquire about the number of state parks. The ranger’s reply—95 at the time—inspired Blasingame to respond immediately with “I’m going to buy the annual pass, and I’m going to do them all in one year.” Head to https://lnkd.in/g2qZa3-P to read "Trailblazer."

Three generations of West Texas lineworkers keep the lights on. Their shared mission of serving co-op members from atop a pole, especially when storms knock out power, is a great source of satisfaction for the patriarch. “Am I proud? Yes. I’m extremely proud,” says Danny, who in 1999 became superintendent at Lighthouse EC and has since been promoted to operations manager.
