Welcome back to the Passport Through Texas series! Next, we’re exploring Public Health Region (PHR) 1 in Northwest Texas. Northwest Texas is home to Palo Duro Canyon, the largest canyon in the state and the second largest in the U.S. It’s often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of Texas.” Earlier this year, the Texas Panhandle experienced several wildfires. The Smokehouse Creek fire burned more than 1 million acres, making it the biggest wildfire in Texas history. DSHS regional staff played a crucial role during this wildfire and assisted the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) by sending public health workers to the operation center. Nurses and immunization staff held clinics in Fritch, Stinnett, Borger, and Canadian. Staff also joined a community resource center to support those impacted by the wildfires and connect them with public health services. The PHR 1 team also responds to other natural disasters, including the Perryton tornado that had 140-mile-per-hour winds. During that response, staff provided tetanus clinics, a cooling center for affected citizens and response personnel, and directed impacted people to other public health related services. Continue to keep an eye out for more updates on PHRs and public health in Texas.
