About us

The Texas Heart Institute is a globally renowned non-profit cardiovascular health organization located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas, the largest medical center in the world. It is an independent, nonprofit organization that is improving cardiovascular health through trailblazing research and discovery, thought leadership, professional education, and world-class patient care and preventative education. The Institute was founded in 1962 by celebrated cardiac surgeon Dr. Denton A. Cooley, and home to the first successful heart transplant and total artificial heart implant in the United States. Today, our physicians and surgeons remain recognized as worldwide leaders in the diagnosis and treatment of even the most complex cardiovascular conditions. Research programs at The Texas Heart Institute continue to push the boundaries of cardiovascular science by translating laboratory discovery to patient care.
