It was truly an honor and the experience of a lifetime to be an MHS fellow this year. I remember how impactful my first staff ride to Gettysburg with The Alexander Hamilton Society was several years ago by studying key figures and walking the terrain that influenced the outcome of one of the most pivotal moments for the United States. Being able to walk the shores of Normandy, the mountains of Italy, the cities of Germany and having the space to sit in the moral weight and contemplate the monumental challenge that faced the allies in 1944 will shape the way I view the U.S. foreign policy for the rest of my career. I highly recommend this fellowship to anyone in a national security field who has not had the chance to visit these sacred, historic sites from WWII. The chance to go with a group of passionate young professionals guided by incredibly gifted and knowledgeable staff is without comparison!

I am delighted to announce that my article, “Empowering Africa: An Investment Worth Making” has been published in the 2024 edition of The Hamiltonian. I discuss three forward-looking strategies for U.S.-Africa diplomacy– the renewal and modification of the African Growth and Opportunity Act, an emphasis on regular summits and meetings, and a robust mineral security strategy. Accountability starts at the top. Today’s announcement of the resignation of Columbia University’s president is not the end of a crisis. Instead of focusing on putting band-aids or guardrails on the problem, like convening free speech, open inquiry, anti-semitism, or disciplinary commissions, Columbia and others should focus on the real reasons why their communities have become purveyors of anti-American and anti-Semitic views. What would it look like for universities to grapple with the fact that the antisemitic views roiling campuses are features rather than bugs of their admissions and academic policies? It would entail changes in what schools look for when they admit students, in what they look for when they hire and tenure faculty, and in the nature of the education students receive. The true sign that change is afoot is not the overdue resignation of a bad leader, but the selection of a new one that is willing and able to reform the core features of the institution. https://lnkd.in/eMKaK9hc

I had the pleasure of visiting Washington, D.C. for the first time this summer for The Alexander Hamilton Society 2024 Student Leadership Conference to represent Belmont University’s chapter of AHS with my Co-President Sarah Ereio. This conference confirmed what I already knew: my interest and passion for foreign policy and international affairs, but it taught me so much about what I didn’t. I learned from panels of experts and professionals about the ever-fragile, always-shifting, and strategic global stage, not only the U.S.’s role abroad, but the delicate intertwinedness of interests and actors that comprise the international order. I am so grateful to AHS for hosting this wonderful event filled with productive discussions, for championing its college chapters, and propelling students into future conversations and professional careers in this space. Touring historic Alexandria was also one of the highlights of my time in D.C. This trip was so pivotal for me.
