Last month, 2025 AIA President Evelyn Lee, FAIA, NOMA, had her first speaking engagement at the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) FORUM 2025 conference. FORUM is the AIAS’ annual design and career development conference. Attendees from around the world gather in a new city to grow together and develop their voices, ideas, and actions for the future. This year’s theme was Crossroads, representing a point at which a crucial decision must be made that will have far-reaching consequences. At the opening event, Lee gave an inspirational speech to over 300 students in architecture programs across the country about how to thrive in their careers and the profession. "Together, we can reimagine what it means to be an architect—not just as a designer of buildings, but as a leader, a collaborator, and a force for good," Lee said. AIA staff were also at the Career and College Expo, sharing AIA resources and information made specifically for students. Here are some of the ways we support students: 📌 Scholarship funding to students and directly to universities 📌 Student awards like the COTE Top Ten for Students 📌 Sponsorship of the Solar Decathlon 📌 Special rate for students at #AIA25 📌 & more: https://bit.ly/40ImTfU Focusing on the future of the profession—and how we can support them—was a great way to start the year! #Architecture #Design #HigherEd

February 1st marks the start of #BlackHistoryMonth. To honor BHM today, we're showcasing Charleston, South Carolina's International African American Museum (IAAM), designed by Moody Nolan and Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. Hood Design Studio designed the IAAM's African Ancestors Garden. The museum is located in the city's Gadsden's Wharf, where an estimated 100,000 enslaved Africans were brought to the U.S. via this pier at the height of the transatlantic slave trade. Incorporating and interpreting the significance of the site choice of Gadsden’s Wharf without downplaying the horrors that occurred there was one of the most important aspects of the job for the architects involved. The exterior ⤵️ The one-story museum sits 13 feet above the wharf, supported by 18 cylindrical columns. The space underneath shelters an outdoor memorial garden, the African Ancestors Garden, that honors the wharf’s tragic history through winding walkways and greenery provided by both African and native plants. The interior ⤵️ Nine interior galleries, designed by Ralph Applebaum Associates, feature space for rotating exhibits, as well as permanent exhibition fixtures telling the story of Black Charleston, the Transatlantic slave trade, South Carolina’s Gullah Geechee culture, and more. A Center for Family History, one of the first of its kind, aims to serve as a resource for the study and advancement of African American genealogy. Access to safe and #AffordableHousing for all is essential to building thriving communities. That’s why we and the United States Conference of Mayors conducted The National Housing Survey. The findings stress the need for collaboration between local, state, and federal governments, with the support of professionals like architects. USCM and AIA are calling for the largest and most comprehensive investment in housing in our nation’s history, coupled with updates and reforms to current federal housing policies and programs. “The housing crisis isn’t just a local issue—it’s a national emergency,” said Evelyn Lee, FAIA, NOMA, 2025 AIA President. Share if you agree. AIA is aware of the recent Memorandum for the Administrator of General Services (GSA) regarding The White House’s request to review the GSA’s Guiding Principles for Federal Architecture. AIA is extremely concerned about any revisions that ➡️ Remove control from local communities; ➡️ Mandate official federal design preferences, or otherwise hinder design freedom; and ➡️ Add bureaucratic hurdles for federal buildings. AIA will monitor and participate in the process laid out in the memo and provide feedback from AIA’s over 100,000 members. #Architecture #Policy #Advocacy
