More women have entered and excelled in the #architecture profession, but challenges such as gender inequality and underrepresentation in leadership roles persist. That’s why events like the Women’s Leadership Summit (#AIAWLS) are so important! They help support and empower women in the architecture, design, and allied building industries. 💪🏾 Mark your calendars for October 9 at #AIAWLS for a panel discussion focused on the impact of women designers on the city of Chicago and the broader U.S. architectural landscape. The panel will feature: 📌 Moderator: Natasha Engan, SVP of Global Sales, Deltek 📌 Kimberly Dowdell, AIA, NOMAC, 2024 AIA President 📌 Gia Biagi, Principal of Urbanism & Civic Impact, Studio Gang 📌 Ciere Boatright, Chicago Department of Planning and Development Commissioner Thank you to Deltek for sponsoring the Women’s Leadership Summit, which helped make this event possible! In 2018 as chair of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Equity and the Future of Architecture, I fought hard to publish the member demographics about gender identity & expression; race; ethnicity; and age. The first report was published in 2019. Why was this important? - It reinforces that membership and the profession is changing. - Number allow us to understand where progress is needed. - Access to this information allow the institute to be transparent in our strategic goal of diversifying the profession. - It also reminds us that there's additional data we need to think about in future reports. It seemed like such a small step at the time, but five years in, I couldn't be prouder. Since then: - For the first time ever, women account for over a quarter of AIA's total membership. - The percentage of reported underrepresented racial and ethnic groups grew 5.7-points between 2013 and 2023 to 17.9%. - Nearly 900 individuals self-reported as LGBTQIA+ in 2022. That number increased to over 1,600 in 2023. More work to be done to reflect the society we serve.
