"In the United States, wealth-based detention undermines our constitutional freedoms and devastates families – particularly Black and brown families – all while padding the pockets of an exploitive for-profit bail bonds industry. I’m proud to stand with The Bail Project to rid this country of the deep injustice created by cash bail." -Michael Eric Dyson We strive for a more perfect justice system, one that works for all people no matter their race or wealth. We pay bail for free and advocate for pretrial policies that treat everyone fairly, no matter how much money they have.
About us
The Bail Project, Inc. is a nonprofit organization designed to combat mass incarceration by disrupting the money bail system ‒ one person at a time. We believe that paying bail for someone in need is an act of resistance against a system that criminalizes race and poverty and an act of solidarity with local communities and movements for decarceration. Over the next five years, The Bail Project will open dozens sites in high-need jurisdictions with the goal of paying bail for tens of thousands of low-income Americans, all while collecting stories and data that prove money bail is not necessary to ensure people return to court. We won’t stop until meaningful change is achieved and the presumption of innocence is no longer for sale.

“In a deeply flawed system, bail money becomes a tool of control turning freedom into something that can only be purchased by those with wealth. For people of color, it’s an oppressive force keeping them locked in a cycle of injustice where freedom isn’t a right, but a privilege, accessible only to those who can afford it. This transforms the very concept of justice into something that serves power and wealth, not fairness or equality.” -Leyna Bloom We pay bail for free while fighting to remove money from the system because nobody should be denied access to equal justice just because of money. Join us and Leyna Bloom in creating a system that’s free and fair for everyone. Learn more at bailproject.org. #FreedomShouldBeFree

“I’ve witnessed how the system impacts our communities, especially people of color and those struggling financially. Nearly half a million people are stuck in jail just because they can’t afford bail and that’s not right.” -Carmelo Anthony Justice should never be reserved for those who can afford it. Georgia’s Senate subcommittee delivered several recommendations to address dire conditions in Atlanta’s Fulton County Jail – but bail reform didn’t make the list. Learn more about what long-term solutions Georgia can implement, like limiting the use of cash bail, to ensure communities behind bars and beyond are safe and guaranteed the same access to justice regardless of their bank account.

“Critics argued this reform would result in an increase in crime—they were wrong. Since Illinois ended wealth-based detention, crime rates have gone down. In Chicago, homicides dropped by 9%, robberies by 8% and carjackings by 18%.” On the one-year anniversary of the implementation of the Pretrial Fairness Act, we’re celebrating Illinois leading the way for statewide bail reform.
