"When you meet with people, please start to listen to their stories without an idea to change them." -Dr. Jaakko Seikkula on integrating principles of #OpenDialogue into mental health practice. In this episode of Unravelling, Kurt White speaks with psychologist Dr. Jaakko Seikkula about his pioneering work in Open Dialogue. Developed in the 1980s in Western Lapland, Open Dialogue reshapes the way we respond to mental health crises, focusing on the power of human connection and the importance of involving a person’s entire social network in their healing process. Dr. Seikkula discusses his research in Finland, where Open Dialogue dramatically reduced relapse rates in psychosis and inspired mental health professionals around the world to challenge conventional approaches to #mentalhealth treatment. 📚 New York Times bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell has just released his latest book, “Revenge of the Tipping Point,” where he revisits the compelling themes from his first book published in 2000. One chapter focuses on the groundbreaking research of Anna Mueller, who joined us as a guest on the Brattleboro Retreat podcast Unravelling to discuss her work in youth suicide prevention. Gladwell calls her and co-author Seth Abrutyn's three-year investigation into a community grappling with suicide clusters a “riveting and devastating work of scholarship,” shedding light on the social roots of this pressing issue. “We need to build worlds that are worth living in, where help is accessible and safe." In this episode of Unravelling, Mary Wilson interviews Anna Mueller, a sociologist and expert in youth suicide prevention. Drawing from her fieldwork in "Poplar Grove," a community devastated by youth suicide clusters, Anna sheds light on how the social worlds that youth inhabit and the messages they learn in those spaces—about who they are supposed to be, mental illness, and help-seeking—shape their feelings about themselves and in turn their risk of suicide. Her new book (co-authored by Seth Abrutyn) Life under Pressure: The Social Roots of Youth Suicide and What to Do About Them, discusses how certain communities, with rigid cultural norms, create an environment where deviation from perfection is met with shame putting youth at greater risk. Find Unravelling on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and our website, https://lnkd.in/ea_J4pyS In honor of #NationalSuicidePreventionMonth, you can read the first chapter of Anna's book at no cost: https://lnkd.in/eFVFkDXr

"I could talk about suicide every day with my clinicians in a clinical way, but in a personal way, to actually talk with my brother about suicide was very difficult. I think I was afraid of what might happen if I had that conversation with him." In this episode of the Brattleboro Retreat's Unravelling podcast, Kurt White interviews Kirk Woodring, LICSW, Vice President of Ambulatory and Community Services at Beth Israel Lahey Health, who shares a deeply personal and professional perspective on suicide prevention. As part of #NationalSuicidePreventionMonth, Kirk sheds light on the stigma and discomfort that often surround discussions of suicide, even within professional circles. He emphasizes the importance of normalizing these conversations, helping to break down isolation and create pathways to support. Help is available. "What I love most about this period is how it places the acceptance of our humanness — our fallibility, mistakes, and messiness — at the heart of Judaism." Sarah Turbow, a therapist at the Brattleboro Retreat reflects on the unrealistic pursuit of perfection in therapy and life. Drawing from the Jewish practice of t’shuva during the month of Elul, she highlights the importance of accepting our inevitable mistakes and embracing vulnerability, growth, and self-compassion as central to the human experience. https://lnkd.in/eHa-kB6C
