  • ✨This past weekend, Chaimae Haddoumi, recent participant in our Migrant Youth Leadership Program and now project co-lead for our upcoming 16 Days of Activism Campaign, attended European Network Against Racism Aisbl (ENAR)’s “Training on Media Messaging for Racial Justice Advocates” 📢 ℹ️ The intensive 1.5-day training was designed to provide a base for advocates to explore the knowledge and tools needed to navigate both traditional and new media platforms. Focus areas included: critical media literacy, story-telling, media landscapes, and outreach techniques. 💡What did Chaimae learn? “I’m thrilled to have participated in the training. It was a valuable opportunity to engage in continuous learning with and from each other.   We tackled critical topics such as media’s role in shaping public perception, crafting compelling narratives, and effective crisis communication. These skills are essential as we recognize the challenges civil society organizations face in accessing spaces for advocacy.   The new insights we gained will empower our work at the Center for Migration, Gender, and Justice, helping us amplify our voices and drive meaningful change in our respective communities.” #migration #gender #justice #youth #leadership #media

  • ✨Today, our Anti-Racism Focal Point, Gowinda Ama A., joined the 45th celebration of CEDAW in Berlin, Germany. 🥳 The celebratory event was organized by the CEDAW-Allianz Deutschland and included programming on the legal-institutional framework of the Convention as well as its implementation in Germany. Here are Ama’s main take-aways from the event: 🎙 “As we celebrate 45 years of CEDAW, there are remaining gaps to address: ▪️Germany’s implementation of CEDAW often overlooks the needs of women, girl, LGBTQIA+, and gender diverse migrants. This not only renders existing measures ineffective, but also creates unsafe conditions for those left behind. ▪️The incomplete implementation of CEDAW constitutes a breach of international law. Discrimination must be prevented, mitigated, and actively responded to. ▪️An intersectional approach to the Convention’s implementation is needed across institutional levels; and most importantly, this must include the meaningful participation of those affected.” ℹ️ Learn more about our take on Germany’s implementation of CEDAW and its lack of migrant-inclusion in our parallel report for last year’s review session: https://lnkd.in/gDRxgUJr #migration #gender #justice #CEDAW #law

  • 🌿Last week, our Climate Focal Point, Tatenda Dlali, participated in the final session of European Network Against Racism Aisbl (ENAR)’s Climate Justice Academy in Bucharest, Romania. ℹ️ The session focused on challenging existing economic models and create economies that work for all, including migrants, in the pursuit of climate justice. ➡️ Why is it important that we, as the Center for Migration, Gender, and Justice, engage in these discussions? 1️⃣ 80% of those displaced by climate change around the world are women and girls. 2️⃣ Heightened risks of gender-based violence and sexual exploitation are correlated to displacement and climate change. 3️⃣ Women only represent 33% of climate-related decision makers. How many of them have experienced displacement due to climate change themselves - research has yet to show. Here is what Tatenda has to say in reflecting on her experiences at the academy: 🗣 “Climate justice for migrant communities includes not only developing policies that support safe and dignified migration pathways in the face of environmental disasters, but reducing disasters to begin with. This means that in addition to advocating for international frameworks that recognize climate-induced displacement and that provide migrants with legal protections and resources, we must also advocate to hold stakeholders responsible for rapid climate change through regulations and reparations.” #migration #gender #justice #climate #economy

  • 🆕 CMGJ @ UN Climate Week 📢 🌊How does sea-level rise impact migration? What are the gendered implications thereof? And, how can these impacts be addressed? ➡️ These are the questions that our Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Lara-Zuzan Golesorkhi, addressed in her input during the UN General Assembly high-level multi-stakeholder meeting on “Addressing the existential threats posed by sea-level rise.” 🗣 “Sea-level rise is a pressing issue that poses significant threats to coastal communities worldwide, leading to forced migration and exacerbating existing gender inequalities. As sea levels continue to rise due to climate change, low-lying coastal areas are increasingly prone to flooding, rendering them uninhabitable and displacing millions of people.” 🔜 A recording of the speech is coming soon; in the meantime, many thanks to the UN Civil Society Unit for the speaker highlight post. #migration #gender #justice #climate #UN

  • 🆕 CMGJ @ UN Climate Week 📢 🇺🇳From the UN Summit of the Future to UN Climate Week, we are here for all of it. 🌿Over the next couple of days, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, high-level sessions on global climate governance are taking place at the UN Headquarters in New York. ✨ Tomorrow, our Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Lara-Zuzan Golesorkhi, will make an intervention on the impacts of sea-level rises on migration from a gender perspective. Here is a sneak peek of her speech: 🎙”By incorporating a migrant-inclusive and gender-responsive approach to sea-level rise adaptation, policymakers can create more effective and targeted solutions that promote resilience and sustainability within coastal communities, and that ultimately prevent, rather than respond to displacement.” 📺 Tune in to UN TV or follow along on social media as we make sure that global climate governance is migrant-inclusive and gender-responsive. #migration #gender #justice #climate #UN
