  • Supported by a grant from the NJ Department of Health, Center for Injury Research and Prevention(CIRP) researchers are developing a unique resource for autistic adolescents to achieve independent mobility. Led by Allison Curry, PhD, Director of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at CIRP, the evidence-based platform was born out of CIRP research showing a disconnect between the proportion of teens interested in driving and those who achieved licensure. “Now that we have a firm understanding of how parents and their teens feel about driving and other ways to get around, our goal is to begin creating these learning modules and resources so that they can be available to families who really need them,” Dr. Curry said. In a new Cornerstone story, learn how the Empowering Transport among Autistic Adolescents (ETA) interactive program supports teens who show interest in driving, as well as teens who do not, so all can achieve freedom and independence. http://ms.spr.ly/6046W3UGE #AutismResearch #AutismSpectrumDisorder #ASD

  • 🌎 This #GlobalDiversityAwarenessMonth, meet the five talented postdoctoral researchers in our Fellowship for Academic Diversity, and learn what diversity, inclusion, & equity in science means to them! This fellowship at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia supports talented researchers and educators from different backgrounds, races, ethnic groups, and walks of life. Building a pediatric workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve is critical to improving the health of all children. We are grateful to have a community of researchers at CHOP who bring their unique backgrounds and perspectives to children's health research, whether they are studying how systemic factors like racism, class, and spatial context impact health outcomes within minority communities or investigating how common pathogens can remodel the microbiome in early life. • Thank you to Galileo Life Sciences founder Charles-André Brouwers, MEng, MBA, for joining our Innovation Ecosystem (IE) at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute Oct. 18! Brouwers led the 2nd week of the IE's Academic Entrepreneurship Fundamentals course. The lively discussion focused on defining and refining the “problem” that medical entrepreneurs want to address, using practical examples from the real world. This 7-week course introduces CHOP personnel to the essential elements of academic entrepreneurship in the context of pediatric medical device development. • During #NationalTeenDriverSafetyWeek, we’re highlighting how Children's Hospital of Philadelphia researchers are approaching the unique challenges teen drivers face on the road. Did you know, for instance, that teens under age 18 who received professional driving instruction experienced lower crash rates than licensed drivers over 18 who did not receive training, according to a Center for Injury Research and Prevention study conducted in Ohio? In a new Cornerstone story, learn how CIRP researchers are taking this finding one step further to ensure new drivers have the trainable skills necessary to stay safe on the road. The team — led by Drs. Flaura Winston, Daniel Romer, and Elizabeth Walshe — is enrolling 1,000 teens into the first randomized controlled study since 1983 to evaluate how pre-licensure training impacts crash risk. In a unique and modern approach, the NICHD-funded DRIVER study not only looks at different types of driver training programs, but also other factors that may influence crash risk, from socioeconomic background to personality traits. • It’s officially National #TeenDriverSafetyWeek! At our Center for Injury Research and Prevention’s partner program, the New Jersey Safety and Health Outcomes (NJ-SHO) Center for Integrated Data, researchers have created a unique and dynamic data dashboard that visualizes, monitors, and tracks progress across communities and over time to promote road safety and transportation equity. “Our mission is to promote a safe and healthy New Jersey through innovative data linkage and data sharing to support community-based solutions that reduce injury and death,” said injury epidemiologist Kristi Metzger, PhD, MPH, Director of the Center. With longitudinal information about health and safety on 24 million individuals of all ages spanning almost 20 years — alongside rigorous data integration methods — the NJ-SHO Dashboard is providing innovative people-focused data with communities across the state. Learn more about how research conducted at the NJ-SHO Center for Integrated Data is affecting teen driver safety to make roads safer for all, on Cornerstone: http://ms.spr.ly/6045WGwsF

  • On the last day of #HispanicHeritageAwarenessMonth, take a step into the Ortiz-Gonzalez Lab at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where you'll often find team members speaking Spanish and embracing diverse cultures and backgrounds. Hear from team members Leonardo Ramos Rodriguez, Miosotis Alicea-Delgado, and Dhyanam Shukla, as well as Dr. Xilma Ortiz-Gonzalez herself on why the lab - which focuses on the mechanisms of pediatric neurodegeneration - is a unique and vibrant work environment. "We're seeing more people that look like what the society looks like, so kids can grow up and say, oh you know, maybe what a doctor looks like could be a woman and could be a brown woman and that's normal and that's OK," says Dr. Ortiz-Gonzalez. #HHM #LabLife
