Keeping Children Safe and Families Together since 1985.

About us

Since 1985, The Children’s Cabinet’s mission has been to keep children safe and families together by providing services and resources that address unmet needs through a unique and effective cooperative effort between the private sector and public agencies in Nevada. By offering a wide range of community programs, the goal of the agency’s founders was to create a lasting public/private partnership to address the needs of children and their families in our community. In the past year, The Children’s Cabinet helped more than 10,000 families. The Children’s Cabinet’s work extends past the immediate needs of youth and families to promote happy, healthy families. Offering more than 20 programs for children (birth to 24 years old), services include providing food and shelter, crisis intervention and case management, academic support, tutoring, job training and transitional living, parenting classes, child care subsidies, child care resource and referral assistance, and free family counseling. The Children’s Cabinet provides a wide range of crisis intervention services, including Safe Place, a service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for youth experiencing violence, abuse or exploitation. Programs also include runaway and homeless youth services, substance abuse and gang intervention programming, work experience training, and independent living for former foster care youth. As a non-profit agency, The Children’s Cabinet relies upon community support in order to offer programs and services at no charge to at-risk children and their families.

Meet child care provider Kathy, who moved into a property acquired by Care Access Real Estate®! 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐘 🏡 Care Access Real Estate’s (CARE) fourth property is located on a quiet residential street near a business corridor in Henderson, Nevada, making it convenient for many families. In CARE’s largest project to date, we transformed a 1970s-era entertainment room into a sunny, open space ideal for child care operations. The primary care area now boasts french doors leading to the large fenced backyard, and a new child care-friendly bathroom. This space is also adjacent to the kitchen, making it easy for Kathy to prep meals and snacks and also host cooking lessons. 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐑 🧑🧒🧒 Growing up, Kathy’s mom had a child care business. As a young adult, Kathy worked as a corrections officer in both juvenile and adult facilities in the Midwest. After working with the Department of Corrections for 20 years, Kathy worked with pregnant teens and in various security jobs. Kathy woke up one day temporarily unable to walk. She realized, “I didn’t want to go back to security.” Her daughter-in-law, who lived in Ghana and was moving to South Africa, came with her children to visit Kathy. Caring for them during that visit sparked a new passion for child care in Kathy, who eventually got connected to CARE through the Las Vegas Urban League. Kathy moved into the CARE home just before Thanksgiving 2023. “I have a power team behind me,” Kathy shares. “I have CARE. I have The Children's Cabinet. I have Urban League. I have two coaches.” Kathy enjoys the outdoor classroom in her new home and says, “I love my kitchen!” Having gone to school for industrial baking, she holds vegan cooking demonstrations for the children (and their parents) in her care. They also do arts and crafts, gardening, and crochet. Kathy loves her new location and is committed to the community. “The neighbors are great, and my oldest daughter lives two main streets away,” says Kathy. “I’m going to make sure I’m available for whoever needs me here. I’m a granny on demand.” #impactinvesting #socialpurposerealestate #socialimpact #childcarerealestate

Greg Cubbon, CEG, PE, and Paul Cottingham, CEG, led a fun geotechnical demonstration for the Children’s Cabinet YouthBuild program in Reno, Nevada.     During the event, we built small-scale models of reinforced fill slopes and tested their stability by adding water, making the learning experience both fun and educational!     We are honored to support Toll Brothers and The Children's Cabinet on their mission to empower the youth in Northern Nevada and motivate them to explore career opportunities in geotechnical engineering and materials testing.    The Children’s Cabinet provides programs and services at no charge to youth and their families, aiming to keep children safe and families together. They offer resources such as parenting classes, childcare financial assistance, and family counseling to support the community.  #Reno #geotechnicalengineering #engeorocks

The Children's Cabinet was recently featured on KRNV News 4 Reno with Anthony Ramos to discuss our Self-Sufficiency Standard, a valuable tool that helps Nevada families understand the income needed to meet basic living expenses without relying on public assistance. Our CEO, Kim Young, explained how the tool provides a clear guide to financial independence by outlining income requirements based on family size and county. Updated with data through 2024, the Self-Sufficiency Standard is an essential resource for families planning their financial futures. Thank you KRNV News 4 Reno for helping us spread the word about this important resource.
