Reflecting on the creativity of our students, pictured above in the 1930s, an art classroom buzzed with students crafting intricate papier-mâché models. Now, under Susan Silver's guidance, our students blend traditional techniques with modern creativity, pushing artistic boundaries and expressing themselves in new ways. Art has always been a cornerstone of The Cushman School’s history, and we are proud to see it continue to evolve, beautifully connecting past and present. #Cushman100

Dr. Cushman had a vision for a curriculum that would involve daily physical activity, aiming to both stimulate the students' minds and keep them active. A century later, we are dedicated to providing programming that grants students the opportunity for regular physical education and to participate in team sports. #Cushman100

Laura Cushman’s insistence on broad educational experiences for her students meant building and carpentry instruction as pictured here in the 1930s. Today, students continue to enjoy many relevant, hands-on opportunities to design, create and build as seen in this engineering elective via the Innovation Center curriculum. #Cushman100

The iconic Cushman School bell was said to have been obtained from James Deering’s stunning Villa Vizcaya estate on Biscayne Bay in May 1941 where it had been used to summon the workers before being given to Cushman. The vintage picture conveys the northwest facade of The Cushman School building in the 1920s that was designed by Russel Skipton complete with the bell cove to showcase this special gift. #Cushman100

Beginning in the 1930s, the annual Spring Play has been a performing arts highlight of the school year. In this longstanding tradition, a different musical is chosen to showcase the talents of our students. Pictured here, the first Spring Play was “Alice in Wonderland” alongside the 2023 production of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." This onstage experience brings out the star quality in all of our Elementary School students who often regard it as one of the most enjoyable Cushman memories. #Cushman100

It has always been a tradition for students to start their day with the morning flag ceremony. This is a special time to recognize students' accomplishments, make important announcements and be reminded of the virtues that shape our school culture. Students then greet and shake their teacher’s hand as they enter the classroom. #Cushman100
