Some fun news. My film, Sloane: A Jazz Singer, will be available to stream worldwide on Kinema starting October 1st.
After six years of shooting, more shooting, editing, re-editing, and then watching it become an award-winning success story, all while fundraising to cover music rights for nearly two dozen tracks, I'm more than a little relieved to be able to share this news. And it all happened because there was an ARMY of support, from Cutters Studios to collaborators in North Carolina, New York, Boston, and Rhode Island.
Carol Sloane was a special person who the world needs to know better. I miss her dearly, even though I only knew her for a relatively brief time, all things considered. But she had that effect on every person she became close to. She was infectiously funny, and she was full of endless stories. She hung out with The Beatles and The Stones, sang with Ella Fitzgerald in an airport lounge, and was hailed by critics and late night hosts like Johnny Carson as the one of the greatest jazz singers of her time. Still, most people haven't heard of Carol Sloane. She left this world penniless, with a one bedroom apartment and a small collection of CDs and LPs to her name, just one month before we started our festival run.
I couldn't have known in 2019 how lucky I was to be able to follow her the week before her final live recording at Birdland in New York. I was even luckier to later call her a friend, and for a couple of years after filming, we exchanged phone calls and letters. She would ask how my kids were doing. I'm forever grateful to have known her, and I hope you get to know the great Carol Sloane yourself, too, when we're up and running.
She will blow you away.
