Since 1994, the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma has honored outstanding reporting that portrays traumatic events with accuracy, insight, and sensitivity through the annual Dart Awards for Excellence in Coverage of Trauma. 2024 marks the Dart Awards 30th anniversary. Over the next 30 days we will be looking back at the award-winning stories and exceptional reporting that has come to define trauma-informed journalism. We are highlighting this meaningful and impactful work as we approach this milestone to acknowledge the writers, editors, photographers, publishers, and media professionals who are committed to ethical reporting that illuminates the impact of violence and tragedy on the lives of victims, survivors, their families and communities. 🚨 Call for Applications 🚨 Reporting Institute on Forced Migration and Children in Europe Children are at the forefront of a historic global refugee crisis, displaced by the millions in active conflict zones and countries decimated by violence, persecution and poverty. While children make up less than a third of the global population, they represent 41% of the world’s refugees and their needs and experiences are often overlooked, oversimplified or sensationalized by the news media. This three-day training institute will bring together Europe-based journalists with leading researchers, clinicians, child development experts and practitioners for expert briefings, panels, workshops and conversations on how to produce science-informed, ethical and effective stories on children and families affected by forced migration and displacement. 📢 Announcing the inaugural cohort of Dart Center Europe's climate reporting workshop! The Best Practices for Reporting on the Environment and Changing Climate workshop, taking place in London from October 9-12, 2024, will bring together journalists and editors from across Europe, all of whom are dedicated to covering the global environmental crisis. It is a unique opportunity to engage with experts and to participate in a peer-to-peer knowledge exchange to gain deeper insights into the ethical, professional, and emotional challenges that arise from reporting on climate change and its impacts. Improving mental health in journalism is an urgent matter. All around the world, journalists are experiencing burnout, anxiety, PTSD and vicarious trauma.
