Autumn Fest at the Endocrine Society We celebrated the season in our Washington DC headquarters with Halloween activities including pumpkin carving/painting, listening to spooky playlists, sampling candy and mocktails. Over the next few days, our Staff Engagement Team (SET) is also hosting a Costume Contest where we can post photos showcasing Halloween costume creativity. Then the entire office will vote for the winners. Special thanks to SET who develop monthly activities for staff enjoyment. Learn more about our culture and work environment: https://bit.ly/2OicBio

About us
The Endocrine Society unites, leads, and grows the endocrine community to accelerate scientific breakthroughs and improve health worldwide. We are unique in that our 18,000 members from 119 countries are not only on the frontier of breakthrough research discoveries, but they also apply this knowledge in treatment of patients with hundreds of debilitating hormone-related diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, thyroid disorders, and infertility. We advance hormone research and excellence in the clinical practice of endocrinology, provide education, broaden the understanding of the critical role hormones play in health, and advocate on behalf of our global community. Our core values of innovation, excellence, stewardship, and community drive our inclusive culture that supports our members’ important work and our internal team. Opioids May Negatively Impact Hormone Health A new Scientific Statement released today highlights research gaps associated with the negative effects of opioid use on the endocrine system. The use and misuse of opioids are a growing global problem. Opioids are used to treat pain in people with cancer or other conditions (e.g., after an injury or surgery), however, they are highly addictive and people can develop opioid use disorder (OUD). The World Health Organization estimates 125,000 people died of opioid overdose in 2019. Read more in Endocrine News: https://bit.ly/3C6O23e “We address the many research gaps associated with the effects and clinical consequences of opioids on the endocrine system within this Scientific Statement. We hope bringing attention to recent research in the space, including opioid use’s impact on gonadal, bone and adrenal conditions, will improve the endocrine health of people using or misusing opioids worldwide.” — Niki Karavitaki, MSc, PhD, FRCP #endocrinology #opiods #opiods #hormonehealth #bonehealth #adrenalhealth #OUD #cancer

Study Finds Intense Exercise May Suppress Appetite in Healthy Humans A vigorous workout does more to suppress hunger levels in healthy adults than does moderate exercise, and females may be especially susceptible to this response, according to a small study published in JES: https://bit.ly/3YeBv5r The study examines the effects of exercise intensity on ghrelin levels and appetite between men and women. Ghrelin is known as the “hunger hormone” and is associated with perceptions of hunger. “We found that high intensity exercise suppressed ghrelin levels more than moderate intensity exercise. In addition, we found that individuals felt ‘less hungry’ after high intensity exercise compared to moderate intensity exercise.” — Kara Anderson, PhD #JES

People with Type 2 Diabetes Who Eat Low-Carb May Be Able to Discontinue Medication Adults with type 2 diabetes on a low-carbohydrate diet may see benefits to their beta-cell function allowing them to better manage their disease and possibly discontinue medication, according to new research published in JCEM: https://bit.ly/4eV2wSs “This study shows people with type 2 diabetes on a low-carbohydrate diet can recover their beta-cells, an outcome that cannot be achieved with medication. People with mild type 2 diabetes who reduce their carbohydrate intake may be able to discontinue medication and enjoy eating meals and snacks that are higher in protein and meet their energy needs.” — Barbara Gower, PhD
