The Farmers Land Trust
Non-profit Organizations
Developing equitable, scalable, and inspiring solutions to protect farmland and secure tenure for farmers
About us
The Farmers Land Trust is focused on supporting and building the Farmland Commons movement as it manifests in communities across the country and around the globe. The Farmers Land Trust directly engages with farmland protection and land access for farmers by creating and supporting Farmland Commons which are non-profit land holding entities that are local to place and controlled by local communities. We engage with land, farmers, ranchers, and stewards who are centered around Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), Biodynamic, or organic-practicing farms, Indigenous communities utilizing cultural stewardship practices, and with faith communities interested in transitioning land to community ownership for regenerative agriculture and social justice.

Find "Land as a Common Good: The Farmers Land Trust and the Farmland Commons" on Wildlands! https://lnkd.in/e6H5vTzZ "In our modern world, this sense of oneness with our living Earth is an experience that fewer among us are able to claim. As our technologies advance and our virtual reality grows, our connection to curated content and instant communication masks our disconnection from the natural world that keeps us. Industry has become global and capitalism has seemingly solidified its reign over our culture and planet. Farming has become concentrated and commodified, and the concept of the home garden has been traded out for “gardening,” a highly marketable and luxurious hobby that many people cannot afford with their dollars or their time. Those who do choose to tend to crops and feed their communities outside of the influence of corporate, mechanized agriculture, are forced to sacrifice many of the support structures secured by a nine-to-five job such as financial stability, access to healthcare, and options for retirement. A livelihood derived from the well-being of the land is a beautiful expression of life, but a vulnerable one. These challenges are further compounded by the rising cost of land and land taxes. As an elder farmer begins to navigate the difficult emotions and realities of transitioning away from farming, they are often forced to sell their life’s work into the commercial real estate market. This market does not place any value on the gradual and measured development of vitality built by insightful and dedicated land stewardship." - Darby Weaver, "Land as a Common Good: The Farmers Land Trust and the Farmland Commons" on Wildlands https://lnkd.in/e6H5vTzZ Thank you Robin Motzer for featuring us! #landascommons #elderfarmers #farming #gardening

"I have been walking around in the golden light feeling as though I live inside a miracle. These crisp autumn days in the plants are something I look forward to and cherish every season. Even so, as my eyes and heart are overwhelmed by the natural beauty, my phone pings tirelessly in my pocket with dark news. My joy for this beautiful season on the farm is slowly eaten away by insidious feelings of survivor’s guilt as I learn more about the absolute devastation in Southern Appalachia. Doom-scrolling the internet for even five minutes can leave you feeling powerless against the momentum of it all. And yet, as I study the brown lacewing larvae scarfing up aphids on my plants and thank the traveling turkeys for taking a tour of my lower pasture, I am reminded that hope is a seed and it is planted in the heart of every individual called to steward the land. Farmers are often overlooked members of our modern society. They rarely chase fame or TikTok views and are portrayed by modern media to be simple people with a lack of interest in adventure or culture. What the majority doesn’t realize, is that farmers are keepers of great wisdom and their skillful work and the land they tend are our greatest hope for a prosperous, green, and just future for all." >>> Read the full article on The Farmers Land Trust blog! https://lnkd.in/e69AAwy9 #hope #farmers #Appalachia #helene #farmlandcommons
