On August 1, 2024, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the Age-Friendly Hospital Measure that will take effect on January 1, 2025. According to the CDC, the U.S. has more than 1,000 heat-related deaths annually. Patients over age 65 are particularly susceptible to heat-related emergencies due to both physiologic and structural vulnerabilities. Identifying heat-related illnesses in the emergency department is critical for initiating timely treatment. Happy #WorldPharmacistsDay! Pharmacists play a critical role as part of the interdisciplinary team that cares for older adult patients in the geriatric emergency department. When a pharmacist is able to evaluate an older adult patient's home medication list, there's a decrease in the number of potentially inappropriate medications, as well as medication-related problems, such as therapeutic duplications and drug interactions.
