“I have returned”: MacArthur’s Philippines Redemption Eighty years ago, in one of the iconic moments of World War II, General Douglas MacArthur declared, “I have returned” upon his triumphant landing on Leyte Island in the Philippines in 1944. MacArthur had little in common with General Marshall, but they shared a mutual respect and demonstrated that strong and effective leadership comes in different shapes and sizes. Check out the newest article in our “Time for Leadership” series on this defining moment in history and how MacArthur’s audacious, larger-than-life leadership style shaped events. https://lnkd.in/eYSiYfmF

#OTD in 1930, George C. Marshall married Katherine Tupper Brown. Their marriage, which spanned nearly three decades until George’s death in 1959, was marked by a deep mutual respect and devotion. George expressed his affection for Katherine in a 1953 letter penned during his long journey to Oslo, Norway to receive the Nobel Peace Prize: “Dearest, I am so anxious to see you and so impatient to get back. I love you very much and miss you hourly,” he wrote. Dodona Manor, which the Marshalls purchased in 1941, is a testament to this strong and enduring marriage and a unique opportunity revisit a moment in time when American leadership saved democracy and preserved peace during troubled times. October 16 Off Duty: Marshall’s Mission to China and China Today Join us Wednesday, October 16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Dodona Manor for an engaging discussion with U.S. Army Major General (Ret.) James Spider Marks. In 1945, Special Envoy George C. Marshall embarked on a challenging mission to China, tasked with brokering peace between the Chinese Nationalist government led by Chiang Kai-shek and the Communist forces under Mao Zedong. The “Marshall Mission” was one last chance to bring a peaceful end to the Chinese Civil War, which led to the victory of the Communists and the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. General Marks will reflect on the legacy of the Marshall Mission and China’s emergence as an economic and military powerhouse decades later. Register Now https://lnkd.in/etgRZS4U
