Researchers from Algenesis Labs and UC San Diego studied how microplastics from the company's bio-based thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) break down in home composting. They found a 97% reduction in microplastic particles from the TPU after 200 days, while ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA) showed no change. The TPU, part of Algenesis's Soleic™ brand, will be available for applications like coatings and injectable plastics this year. In tests, coated cotton and a TPU injection-molded phone case biodegraded rapidly in compost, demonstrating significant degradation within weeks. This quote comes from Vincent “Vince” Lomardi, an American football coach for the Green Bay Packers. His motivation and leadership skills are credited to winning 3 consecutive National Football League (NFL) championships. This made him one of the most iconic and recognizable figures in American football history. Lombardi’s quote reminds us that failure is part of life. What counts is getting back up. Whether you fall once or a hundred times, pick yourself up and strive to succeed. #mondaymotivation #vincelombardi #determination #motivation #getbackup

In May, the Madrid-based biomaterials company unveiled its Celium™ Swatch Sampler collection, showcasing the material’s versatility with various tones, marbled patterns, and embossed styles. Celium, a leatherlike material created by Polybion™, is produced from agricultural fruit waste through a bacterial process at a solar-powered plant in Central Mexico. Founded in 2014 by brothers Axel and Alexis Gómez-Ortigoza and their friend Bárbara González Rolón, Polybion initially explored mycelium before transitioning to bacterial cellulose production in 2019. The company’s 14,000-square-foot facility aims to produce 1.1 million square feet of Celium annually, emphasizing compliance with EPA, REACH, and ZDHC standards while sourcing fruit waste within a 30-mile radius. Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Northeastern University have created FibeRobo, a programmable fiber that changes shape with temperature and requires no sensors. This low-cost, machine-washable fiber is ideal for responsive textiles like compression garments and jackets. FibeRobo can be customized for thickness and activation temperature, contracting up to 40% without bending. Future research will focus on improving the fiber's sustainability and production efficiency, as presented at the annual Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology in October 2023. Sileather® is making waves in the electric vehicle sector, being used in models from Leapmotor, HiPhi Motors, and Huawei/SERES. In the Leapmotor C10 SUV, “baby-grade” Sileather is featured in seats, door panels, and other high-touch areas, chosen for its low volatile organic compound emissions, stain resistance, and family-friendly qualities. In the HiPhi Z model HA1, Sileather enhances comfort and functionality in seat backs, armrests, and consoles. Notably, in the Huawei AITO M9, Sileather transforms into a 32-inch projection screen for back-seat passengers, also serving as a shade between the front and back of the car. Engineers favored Sileather for its flexibility and crack resistance in extreme temperatures, a requirement that vinyl could not meet.
