The UN Cybercrime convention will make people less safe - not more. Online civic space and volunteer communities working across borders to advance the public interest will be under greater threat than ever if this treaty moves forward.
GNI is deeply concerned that the UN Convention Against #Cybercrime creates a permission structure for the extraterritorial surveillance and prosecution of human rights defenders, the harassment of tech company employees, and the compelled compromise of systems that protect the privacy and security of users around the world. We call on member states to vote no or abstain when this UN Convention comes to a vote at the UN General Assembly, while bolstering resources for existing bilateral and multilateral mutual legal assistance efforts, building capacity for rule of law abiding investigation and prosecution, and improving coordination on legitimate, necessary, and proportionate efforts to address cybercrime. The draft UN cybercrime treaty would be a disaster for people's fundamental freedoms. In this excellent statement, GNI highlights how and calls on member states to vote no or abstain when this UN Convention comes to a vote at the General Assembly.

GNI appreciates the opportunity to provide feedback on Ofcom's draft transparency reporting guidance for regulated online platforms and service providers. While GNI values Ofcom’s pursuit of transparency reporting within its broader online safety regime, the submission details a number of concerns that are important to reassess. This includes the extent of ambiguity surrounding the types of services that will fall under the categories of 1, 2A, and 2B services. GNI encourages Ofcom to try and harmonize its transparency guidelines as much as possible with other national/regional level regulations, as well as other established international reporting standards, such as the European Sustainability Reporting Standards, Global Reporting Initiative, and International Sustainability Standards Board, to avoid conflicting standards and excessive compliance costs for lower risk services. Super glad to see the Global Network Initiative releasing such a strong statement on the UN Convention against #Cybercrime. The convention will be a gift to any authoritarian country in the world and its potential for abuse is tremendous. If you want an example of why the UN is not fit for purpose to make decisions about the internet, this UN cybercrime convention is it. 👇👇👇

A couple of weeks ago, Access Now hosted a session at the eleventh edition of the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA's) Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (#FIFAfrica24) on responsibility of tech companies in protecting human rights during conflict. We explored how narratives around internet shutdowns and data governance in Sudan can help understand what the future of digital rights holds with the prospect of more zones of conflict. It was great to moderate the session with Aliou Diouf from Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, Eiman Kheir from Meta, Montserrat Legorreta from Global Network Initiative, and my colleague Isedua Oribhabor from Access Now to dissect this very important topic. Some key takeaways from our session were: 1. Tech companies cannot be neutral when it comes to advancing human rights; 2. They must take swift and equal action to protect and respect human rights across all regions, particularly, in times of conflict; 3. Multi-stakeholderism is key in tackling identified challenges and devising solutions in the digital space; and 4. Solidarity and collaboration are a driver in advancing human rights.

At Committee to Protect Journalists, we share the deep concern about the UN #cybercrime convention detailed below by our partners at Global Network Initiative. We know that journalists will pay a price and call on member states to halt the convention as it comes for a vote in the General Assembly. #pressfreedom #journalismisnotacrime
