Public funding and government support are crucial to leveling the playing field between alternative proteins and conventional animal products, says GFI's Jessica Almy in this Vox piece by Kenny Torrella 👉 https://bit.ly/3M97Y7j In 2022, Congress approved around $5 million annually (representing 0.1% of the USDA's $5 billion annual R&D budget) for the USDA to conduct in-house alternative protein research. While a positive start to getting alt proteins on the agenda of policymakers, much more support and investment is needed to accelerate the alt protein industry at the scale and pace required. "For the same reason that governments give billions of dollars annually to renewable energy and global health research, governments should be investing in better, safer, more efficient ways of producing protein," writes Torrella.
American government built the meat industry. Now can it build a better food system?

Australian fermentation startup Cauldron has received on AUD4.3 million ($2.8 million) from Australia's Department of Industry, Science and Resources Industry Growth Program (IGP) to help them scale their manufacturing platform that enables the production of high-value ingredients via precision fermentation. Get the details: https://bit.ly/3YT8YnH "Cauldron [...] believes a continuous (rather than a batch) ‘hyper’ fermentation process will be key to unlocking the commercial viability of microbial fermentation for a host of ingredients that have historically been sourced from animals or petrochemicals." Innovations like this are poised to drive production costs down, which is crucial if alternative protein products are to be priced competitively with their conventional counterparts. So great to see Australia putting public funds towards this potentially transformative technology!

🇸🇬 Singapore-based cultivated meat startup Ants Innovate recently held a private tasting to inaugurate Cell Essence®, a cultivated pork oil they've designed specifically for use in hybrid meats that combine plant-based and cultivated ingredients. "The startup calls itself an 'industry enabler and a translator of technology to products', and aims to supply functional ingredients for cultivated and plant-based protein manufacturers to make premium whole-cut meats." Ants Innovate is among several startups working on cultivated meat ingredients that can be combined with plant-based ingredients to create hybrid products that are more affordable to produce and scale than fully cultivated products. ➡️ Our latest analysis explores how a shift to alternative proteins could enable a massive increase in carbon sequestration opportunities in the U.S. and help the country meet its emission reduction goals. Details 👉 https://bit.ly/4ckiqnd 🏞️ Alternative proteins require far less land than animal-based proteins to produce, allowing us to significantly increase the U.S. carbon sink through land use efficiency and prioritized restoration of feed and forage cropland to forests and wetlands. ✈️ According to a new analysis, a 50% shift toward alternative proteins would enable the sequestration of 177.8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) every year, a value larger than the combined CO2 emissions of all U.S. domestic flights (FAA 2021). 📝 To learn more, download our Land Use Analysis report: https://bit.ly/4ckiqnd

⚖️ Despite impressive commitments made by global governments in 2023, public investment in alternative proteins falls short of key targets. Learn more in this insightful piece featuring GFI's Michael Carter: https://bit.ly/3WVgxsI According to our 2023 State of Global Policy Report, global public investment in alternative proteins grew in 2023, totaling an estimated $523 million, for an all-time investment total of $1.67 billion. While governments around the world stepped up their commitments to alt proteins, the amount invested in the sector is a tiny fraction of the $10.1 billion needed for alternative proteins to realize their full economic and climate benefits, highlighted by a 2021 Global Innovation Needs Assessment for Protein Diversity. Learn more about this public funding gap and what global governments can do to prioritize public investment in #alternativeproteins in our 2023 State of Global Policy Report 👉 https://bit.ly/3JPlKeS).
