Through compassion and action, together we can create a hunger free Eastern Massachusetts.
About us
The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. GBFB powers a distribution network of over 600 partner agencies in 190 cities and towns across Eastern Massachusetts, feeding more than 600,000 people and distributing over 104 million pounds of food annually. GBFB acquires 76% of our food through financial contributions from generous donors to procure high-nutrient quality food. With our purchasing power, we can confidently guarantee that for every dollar donated, 92 cents goes to hunger-relief efforts. We also benefit from the generosity of over 27,500 volunteers annually who help to sort and pack food products to be distributed to our partner agencies across Eastern MA. GBFB works to acquire, store, organize, and distribute food through our 600 partner agencies that include local food pantries, community meal programs, homeless and residential shelters, youth programs, senior centers, and day-care centers embedded in communities throughout 190 cities and towns of Eastern Massachusetts. GBFB’s partner agency locator provides an easy way for people in need to find help nearby. GBFB also distributes food directly to those in need through dedicated programs that serve particularly vulnerable groups, such as seniors and children. Since 2009, GBFB has operated out of a state-of-the-art, 117,000 square foot food distribution facility, the Yawkey Distribution Center, located in the Newmarket section of Boston. The Greater Boston Food Bank is a member of Feeding America, the nation's largest hunger-relief organization.

Today, we honor and celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous communities across the country. At GBFB, we recognize that food insecurity disproportionately affects Indigenous families, with a staggering 62% of American Indian/Alaska Native households in MA experiencing food insecurity just last year. We're committed to working alongside Indigenous partners to provide equitable access to nutritious food, respecting cultural traditions, and promoting food sovereignty. Join us in supporting efforts that create a more inclusive and just food system for all. Together, we have the power to #EndHungerHere #IndigenousPeoplesDay

For eight years, Roxbury resident Jairalis Mercado has been both a client and a volunteer for the Mobile Market at her daughters’ school, Orchard Gardens K-8 Pilot School. When times get tough, Jairalis turns to GBFB’s partner agency to ensure that her children are getting the nutritious foods they need to grow, learn, and thrive. “Not a lot of people get the benefits they need, so I think the food bank is a good resource for the community. For me personally, I don’t get [SNAP]…I have gotten help from food pantries.” Read her story and more in our Harvest Newsletter at https://lnkd.in/dJ4X4fv

From hosting our Taste of the Food Bank event—where passionate chefs from across Greater Boston came together to raise funds to feed our neighbors in need—to wearing orange for Hunger Action Day, which was officially recognized by the MA Governor, this month has been a true community effort. Together with our partners, elected officials, and local celebrities, we’ve raised awareness about food insecurity in our communities. GBFB’s CEO and President Catherine D’Amato, along with GBFB Health and Research Advisor Dr. Lauren Fiechtner, were featured in a great article about how GBFB partners with healthcare organizations like Boston Medical Center (BMC) and Mass General Brigham to provide nutritious food to patients in need, emphasizing the close link between food, nutrition, and health. “If we think of food as medicine, we’re treating a problem,” says D’Amato. “Earlier on, the chronic disease isn’t there, and food can help prevent those chronic diseases.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e4k_4pTv
