Photojournalists face the delicate challenge of capturing the realities of vulnerable communities, like unhoused people, without fueling harmful stereotypes. Drawing from her personal experience, a deep sense of empathy, and on-the-ground perspectives Report for America/CatchLight corps member Aryana Noroozi approaches her photojournalism for Black Voice News with intention and care, ensuring her images reflect both the humanity and dignity of those often overlooked. “I hope that we have that judgment as journalists, to be sensitive and be human no matter who we’re representing in the media,” Noroozi said. “But just think of unhoused people as even more vulnerable than other people you've reported on, and a higher bar for ethics and how you act to make sure people are comfortable. Recognize that these folks have been treated like dirt by everyone in society. So you really have to show them you're not trying to do that. And that comes with your actions, your body language, your demeanor, not bringing your camera out like right away, and just talking to them. I can relate to these people in many ways, and so just being a person, I think, is the number one thing here.” Learn more in this week’s edition of our newsletter by GroundTruth’s director of photography Ben Brody: https://lnkd.in/eAw2KSp2 #photojournalism #unhousedcommunites #housing #california #photos #media #localnews #groundtruth #newlsetter #catchlight

At WKKF, we believe in the power of community-led efforts to drive racial healing and equity. Across the country, initiatives are sprouting that are directly tackling deep-rooted racial inequities. From youth in Baltimore providing vital bike repair services to address transportation gaps, to a nurse in Connecticut reimagining maternal care for Black women, to Tampa’s city government enabling first-time homeownership in gentrifying areas — each project is dismantling systemic barriers in innovative ways. These initiatives demonstrate that lasting change begins at the local level, where conversations and collaboration open doors for progress. Joseph Williams, Deputy Managing Director of Word in Black, said it best: "You have enough people doing this over time, and you can change the world." We are excited to kick off a series that will spotlight these transformative efforts, in partnership with The GroundTruth Project , showcasing models of success that can inspire other communities. Join us as we continue to highlight these stories of racial healing and equity. Learn more: https://wkkf.co/fi8q

Journalists are no strangers to pressure. The high stakes and fast pace of the job can be exhilarating, but also very stressful and, in some cases, unsustainable. Many journalists, especially in recent years, have stepped back or quit due to the constant pressure and stress of the work. Their main reason for leaving? Burnout. Here are some tips for journalists to tackle burnout from a 2021 edition of our newsletter where we talked with Kim Brice, stress reduction coach and co-founder of The Self-Investigation, and Tom Hourigan, founder of Take A News Break, to ask for their advice on how to manage work-related stressors and prevent burnout properly. Dean Yates, a former journalist and mental health advocate for Reuters, also weighed in on his experience of trying to foster a culture of well-being within the newsroom. https://lnkd.in/duAhHjM5 #worldmentalhealthday #burnout #journalists #media

Feminist and civil society organizations marched in San Salvador on September 15, in counter-protest to the official Independence Day military parade, to draw attention to the lack of public policies focused on gender and to the impunity in the investigations of femicide, which have reached 27 cases this year. For Alharaca, Report for the World corps member Kellys Portillo captured the images of the protest for a story of her colleague Charlie Iraheta which amplifies the voices of the Salvadoran protestors in their fight to gain economic independence, control of their bodies and access to rights such as education, health and housing. https://lnkd.in/emXj5pDU #globalnews #feminist #journalism #photojournalism

Hurricane Helene carved a path of destruction through Florida and five other states, claiming at least 175 lives and causing billions of dollars in damage, with early estimates calculating that some of the affected areas could take years to fully recuperate. Our Report for America corps members in the affected states has been covering the storm and its impact, highlighting the human and environmental toll of this disaster and the efforts from rescuers and the authorities to help the victims. Here are some of those stories; https://lnkd.in/ef-wZ9Bh #hurricanehelene #florida #northcarolina #journalism #localnews

Today marks the one-year anniversary of Hamas’ terrorist attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and triggered the Israel’s military campaign in Gaza that has taken the lives of an estimated 42,000 Palestinians, the vast majority of whom are civilians, and killed more than 128 journalists, the most by a war in the 21st century, per the Committee to Protect Journalists. [https://lnkd.in/eZMKXQEw.] Our Report for America and Report for the World corps members have written over 200 stories related to the conflict, from the protests on campuses across the United States and the plight of refugees to the impact on trade and diplomacy in multiple regions. Editor Alana Campbell curated a storymap with highlights from their coverage over the last year, focusing on stories directly related to the conflict, responses and protests. https://lnkd.in/eN-5KW-y #middleast #localnews #ontheground #journalism

As we approach the one-year anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war, this week’s newsletter features a reflection from our founder Charles Sennott, who on Sep. 23 moderated a panel with two mothers, one Israeli and one Palestinian, who lost their sons to the conflict in 2002 and now are part of The Parents Circle Families Forum, a joint Israeli-Palestinian program that brings together 700 bereaved families that have chosen dialogue over revenge. “If you want advice, please don’t be pro-Israel or pro-Palestine, be pro-peace. This is the thing that we need. And if you fight together about this, that will never help us in any way. But if you call for peace, this is what we need,” Layla Al-Sheikh, one of the mothers, told the crowd at Suffolk University’s Ford Hall. The gathering at Suffolk University’s Ford Hall was sponsored by the American Friends of the Parents Circle - Families Forum Circle in partnership with the GBH Forum Network.
