Welcome Plug and Play Tech Center — you’re in good company. Our metro area produces more AI patents per capita and has more new AI-related jobs than any other metro in the country — it just makes sense that downtown San Jose, especially with San José State University a couple blocks away, will only grow as a critical hub for the next generation of innovators. Thanks to Knight Foundation Pacific Gas and Electric Company, and many others for making this exciting project possible. https://lnkd.in/gU4RHKTv

How do the arts drive economic growth and create pathways for economic mobility in our communities? This was the heart of our conversation at the 18th annual Knight Foundation, Knight Media Forum where we explored the tangible economic impact of the arts, from workforce development to community revitalization. Together with an incredible group of cultural leaders, Laura Zabel (Springboard for the Arts), Valerie Gay (City of Philadelphia), and Judilee Reed (United States Artists), we discussed how investments in the creative sector foster economic opportunity, resilience, and inclusion. A few takeaways: 1. The arts aren’t just a cultural asset, they are a jobs engine, fueling small businesses, independent artists, and local economies. 2. Cities and towns that integrate arts and culture into planning policies see stronger, more resilient communities. 3. Investing in artists as entrepreneurs and cultural leaders creates real pathways to economic mobility, particularly for historically marginalized communities. These insights underscore why intentional, sustained investment in the arts matters. It was an honor to moderate this dynamic discussion and I’m grateful for the brilliant perspectives shared. #ArtsAndEconomy #CreativeSector #EconomicMobility

Honored to moderate a powerful panel on archiving and preserving Black history and culture at Knight Foundation’s annual Library Leaders Conference. I had the privilege of joining Dr. Kara O. (J. Paul Getty Trust), Tameka Bradley Hobbs (Broward County African-American Research Library), and Charlotte’s own Cheryse Terry, owner of ArchiveCLT, for a meaningful discussion on the importance of safeguarding America’s history and narratives. The next day, 30+ leaders from Charlotte and across North Carolina joined over 1,000 attendees at the Knight Media Forum. Charlotte Mecklenburg Library CEO Marcellus Turner took the main stage alongside an esteemed panel to discuss intellectual freedom. Lizzy Hazeltine, Executive Director of the North Carolina Local News Lab Fund, shared an update on the progress of #PressForwardCharlotte, while Shannan Bowen led a compelling discussion on how local news reporters and organizations—such as Laura Lee with Blue Ridge Public Radio (BPR), Micah Spain with Appalachia Relief, and Patricia Serrano with Enlace Latino NC—helped Western NC residents access vital information and resources in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. At a time of change and uncertainty, the Knight Media Forum and Library Leaders Conference left me deeply inspired and more connected than ever to those working to build thriving, informed, and resilient communities. During KMF25, I had the pleasure of moderating a panel dedicated to third spaces in our communities. Joined by Meg Daly, Hollie Russon Gilman, Ph.D. and Shamichael Hallman, we discussed how spaces like public parks, libraries and community centers play a vital role in building trust, creating connections and encouraging local civic participation. A repeated theme in our conversation was the importance of listening. Meg shared, “People want to be safe, they want to engage with nature and they want to be part of a community. If you listen first, your design will reflect those priorities.” Heading back to Akron, I’m inspired to explore how we can continue to shape our third spaces to be welcoming and vibrant places for all people, ensuring everyone can experience a sense of community and joy.

"It is up to us to ensure that the doors of opportunity and the pathway to the American Dream are open to everyone." — Dr. Vivek Murthy At KMF’s closing keynote, former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy joined Knight President & CEO Maribel Perez Wadsworth for a powerful conversation on trust, technology and the deep need for community in today’s world. From social media’s impact on our health and well-being to the importance of intimate, real-life connections, Dr. Murthy reminded us that in moments of crisis, it’s not our online followers who show up—it’s the people we truly trust.
