As we approach the one-year anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war, this week’s newsletter features a reflection from our founder Charles Sennott, who on Sep. 23 moderated a panel with two mothers, one Israeli and one Palestinian, who lost their sons to the conflict in 2002 and now are part of The Parents Circle Families Forum, a joint Israeli-Palestinian program that brings together 700 bereaved families that have chosen dialogue over revenge. “If you want advice, please don’t be pro-Israel or pro-Palestine, be pro-peace. This is the thing that we need. And if you fight together about this, that will never help us in any way. But if you call for peace, this is what we need,” Layla Al-Sheikh, one of the mothers, told the crowd at Suffolk University’s Ford Hall. The gathering at Suffolk University’s Ford Hall was sponsored by the American Friends of the Parents Circle - Families Forum Circle in partnership with the GBH Forum Network. Happy World News Day 🌎 🗞 World News Day is a global initiative to draw public attention to the role that journalists play in providing trustworthy news and information that serves citizens and democracy. At a time when truth is under attack, credible journalism has the power to save lives, build trust, and inform the public’s understanding of an increasingly complex and uncertain world. It is a powerful reminder that journalism matters — a message that over 800 global news organizations celebrate annually on this day. To honor World News Day, we spoke with the editor-in-chief of the Daily Maverick, Branko Brkic, who is one of the leaders that helped start this wonderful celebration of global news and is leading a campaign for this year’s theme; Choose Truth. World News Day is organized by the Canadian Journalism Foundation, the World Editors Forum and the South Africa-based Daily Maverick’s Project Kontinuum. In honor of World News Day tomorrow and this year’s theme ‘Choose Truth’, our founder Charles Sennott spoke with the editor-in-chief of the South African news organization Daily Maverick Branko Brkic, one of the pioneers of this important event that reaffirms journalism’s critical role throughout the world. "Perhaps the biggest issue that all of us right now are concerned about is the frontal attack on truth and the meaning of truth,” said Branko. “And this is basically the beginning of a much longer campaign whose goal is to educate people and readers all over the world and to give a certain level of encouragement to our brothers and sisters all over the world who, right now, mostly feel as a part of the profession under attack. 📰 ALUMNI ON ASSIGNMENT: Kelan Lyons The gap in voter participation between people with disabilities and the rest of Connecticut voters has increased from 3.3 percent in the 2020 election year to 11 percent in 2022. The decrease in disabled people’s participation is related to mail-in ballot regulations that were more accessible during the COVID-19 pandemic. For Bolts Magazine, former Report for America corps member Kelan Lyons Lyons details the difficulties disabled people have voting in person that are worsened by the state’s rigid qualifications to vote by mail. https://lnkd.in/e_xYp5xe Lyons was a Report For America corps member who covered the intersection of mental health and criminal justice for CT Mirror #alumni #report #voting #localnews #journalism

Crisis counselors at 988, a national suicide and crisis lifeline, are receiving sexually abusive calls that disrupt their work and extend the waiting times for those who truly need help. Although these calls are infrequent, but not uncommon, they’re affecting the counselors’ mental health and their capacity to do their jobs, driving some to quit. For WSIU Public Broadcasting, Report for America corps member Melissa Ellin investigates how the current safeties in place for crisis counselors don’t fully protect them from harassment, and how that duty is the responsibility of individual call centers. https://lnkd.in/eiTv9XQw #mentahealth #localnews #journalism #media
