Has an actor ever been cast by accident? In 'No Country for Old Men,' a casting mix-up completely changed the whole movie. The Coen brothers had their perfect cast for the movie version of Cormac McCarthy's 'No Country for Old Men' with Tommy Lee Jones as the crusty west-Texas sheriff and Javier Bardem as the villain. They hired rugged everyman Jim Brolin as Llewelyn Moss, the aging Vietnam vet. But on the first day of shooting, his son Josh Brolin showed up instead. A mix-up in the casting office had resulted in the part being offered to the much younger Josh. With contracts signed, it was too late to change. The Coen brothers quickly adapted, deciding to set the story in 1980 instead of the present day. Josh Brolin ended up delivering a stellar performance, despite the initial mix-up. This casting error turned into a happy accident that added a unique twist to the film. Josh Brolin’s career was at a standstill before this role. This accidental casting revitalized his career and proved that sometimes, mistakes can lead to incredible results. What an incredible difference one casting error can make. You never know what happy accidents are waiting to shape the future. ____________ Enjoy stories of serendipity like this? Subscribe to my Happy Accidents newsletter and podcast! Serendipity Strikes Twice: How a Facebook Post and Suitcases Connected the Dots In this week's episode of the Happy Accidents podcast, I share two incredible serendipitous moments that happened recently through our involvement with Friends of Honduran Children (FOHC). From supporting three children at an orphanage in Honduras to starting a small business with two talented girls, the connections we’ve made are nothing short of miraculous. The first serendipity struck when a Facebook post about handcrafted greeting cards connected us with someone who had supported these exact same two girls years ago. The second came when a group member's search for used suitcases on Facebook Marketplace led to an unexpected act of generosity from someone who had ALSO been to the same orphanage.
