🔔 New report out by RMI Contrail Impact Task Force: Contrails, the condensation trails formed by aircraft flying through cold and humid airspace, are significant contributors to aviation’s climate impact. A new report, written collaboratively by stakeholders from across the aviation industry through RMI’s Contrail Impact Task Force, provides a comprehensive overview of contrail management. It dives into topics including contrail prediction modeling, the current state of research efforts, and considerations for future deployment of contrail avoidance strategies. 📄 Monitoring, reporting, and verification (#MRV) systems for contrails are one way to further our understanding of their climate impact and devise mitigation strategies. In Chapter 6, ICCT aviation researchers provide guiding principles for contrail MRV frameworks and emphasize the importance of robust data collection, quantifying uncertainty, and allowing flexibility for these systems to evolve with scientific research. Size matters when it comes to electric vehicle batteries 🚗🔋 For potential buyers weighing the decision of purchasing a battery electric vehicle (#BEV), range anxiety—the fear of not reaching their destination or the next charging station on a single charge—is often cited as a concern. But is bigger always better? And to what extent do different types of drivers benefit from larger batteries? Find the answers in our recent study: theicct.org/battery-size/

What is #BatterySwapping 🔋 and how can it potentially improve overall efficiency while reducing infrastructure constraints for #ElectricBuses 🚌? Bhaumik Gowande, Associate Researcher at the ICCT, answers this in our latest blog, which includes details about how separating batteries from buses dramatically reduces the bus's capital cost because swapping operators own the batteries instead of the bus owner.
Can battery swapping accelerate the Indian private bus market’s transition to electric?

🛩 🔔 News from the ICCT’s aviation team: To achieve the International Civil Aviation Organization goals of net-zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2050, all new aircraft delivered after about 2035 will need to emit zero net CO2 throughout their operational lifetimes. While #SAF blends and fuel efficiency can substantially cut emissions, additional action will be needed from aircraft manufacturers to transition away from fossil fuels by the mid-2030s. The report estimates that there will be a market for at least 10,000 new aircraft powered by hydrogen, electricity, or 100% SAFs through 2042. 🚗🔋 ICCT’s new research brief estimates the life-cycle emissions of four common passenger vehicle powertrains in the United States: internal combustion engine (#ICE) vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles (#HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (#PHEVs), and battery electric vehicles (#BEVs). 📊 The results are clear: BEV sedans and SUVs have the lowest life-cycle GHG #emissions across all powertrains. Across PHEVs, HEVs, and ICE SUVs/sedans in model year 2024 and those projected for model year 2030, life-cycle GHG emissions are higher than BEVs powered by the average grid mix, and even higher when compared with BEVs powered by 100% renewable electricity. What are European countries doing to boost electric truck sales? 🚚 ⚡#Race2Zero There are several ways for governments to support the development of the zero-emission vehicle market. Policy instruments such as direct purchase subsidies can help mitigate high purchase costs and boost sales in the early adoption phase. 🔎 For our quarterly market monitor series, we examined subsidy programs for zero-emission trucks across European countries. Here's what we found: 🔹 As of May 2024, 11 countries in the EU-27, as well as Norway and the United Kingdom, offer direct purchase subsidy schemes to transport operators. 🔹 Beyond subsidies, other financial incentives such as comprehensive tax benefits are available in countries like Belgium, Denmark, France, and Spain. 🔹 Some countries, like Austria, Germany, The Czech Republic, and Hungary, offer CO2-based road tolls for diesel trucks and an exemption or reduction for zero-emission HDVs. Find more details on the different subsidy programs and the current European heavy-duty vehicle market ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dkbBHRGb #ZeroEmissionVehicles #GreenTrucks #CleanTransportation
