About us

The Kempe Center was the first of its kind, established in 1972 to better understand and prevent child maltreatment and to serve affected children and their families. For over 50 years, the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect has worked to improve the lives of children and families and strengthen the communities that serve them. We continue to pursue the health and well-being of children and families through providing comprehensive expert medical care, leading ground-breaking research, delivering effective education to multi-disciplinary professionals, focusing attention on inequities, and engaging in timely advocacy to improve the effectiveness of child welfare policies.
