Inspired by this year’s Black History Month theme — African Americans and Labor — The Lacek Group is highlighting activist Mary Ann Shadd Cary and her work for the abolition of slavery and equal treatment for Black workers. Cary was the first African American woman to publish a newspaper in North America, creating The Provincial Freeman to spread anti-slavery messages. An important leader of the abolitionist movement in Canada and the U.S., Cary urged and championed legal, economic and social equality for African Americans.
