Earlier this week as part of the African Venture Philanthropy Alliance (AVPA) conference, Lemelson Foundation Program Officer Maggie Flanagan joined a panel to discuss the power and promise of catalytic capital to foster innovations at scale that fuel progress toward the SDGs. Along with representatives from the MacArthur Foundation, Small Foundation, RisCura, and FSD Africa, she discussed the opportunities for catalytic capital providers and practitioners to invest in #SGBs and #IBEs in Africa addressing social and environmental issues, and particularly the climate crisis. The Lemelson Foundation is one of many philanthropic supporters of the C3 initiative working to promote greater and more effective use of catalytic capital as part of impact investing. We’re always excited to see what inventor and STEM advocate Dasia Taylor is doing next. Check out her latest project, the NERD STEM Box — a kit that provides curious kids with the ingredients they need for a fun science experiment (this one involves using chemistry to create colorful “worms”). Dasia started her own invention journey with a high school science fair in Iowa City. She designed low-cost sutures that switch color if an infection has occurred — an invention that led to a patent and her own company, called Variegate. In addition to being an entrepreneur, Dasia focuses on equity to ensure all students are able to access STEM education and get inspired to follow their own invention journeys. I’ve been keeping my progress lowkey, but I’m thrilled to finally share a glimpse of what I’ve been working on! A few months ago, I teamed up with Andrew Snyder to film the instructional content for the NERD STEM Box. I’m excited to share the full video for the first module, the start of a journey that’s been three years in the making. This project is more than a kit— it’s a mission to inspire young minds, challenge creativity, and make STEM fun and accessible for all. Here’s to more curiosity, hands-on learning, and making a difference in classrooms and homes alike 🚀

ICYMI: The Lemelson Foundation Program Officers Katie Krummeck and Kory Murphy recently attended the third annual “Ready, Set, Innovate” event in Klamath Falls, Oregon, sponsored by the Oregon Institute of Technology. During this day-long innovation clinic, high school and community college students used design thinking to work on a community-informed challenge. “The challenge was about improving opportunities for students to stay and grow their careers in Klamath Falls,” Katie said. “The students interviewed stakeholders, made sense of what they learned, brainstormed potential ideas, developed prototypes, and got feedback from community leaders.” The event included an Oregon-based innovator and entrepreneur, Lazarus 3D Founder and CEO Jacques Zaneveld, who shared his own invention journey. His device scans areas of the body prior to surgery and provides 3D-printed, patient-specific models that allow surgeons to safely practice incisions and sutures. At the Foundation, we’re working with partners to nurture entrepreneurial ecosystems like the strong and growing innovation community in Oregon, and support invention education to foster the next generation of diverse problem-solvers. “It was super inspiring to be with more than 100 young people and more than 100 community members who came together to work on a meaningful problem facing their community,” Katie shared.
