Students need multiple opportunities to practice reading new words -- multimorphemic words too! Morphology has the unique ability to support both word recognition and comprehension. By explicitly teaching students to navigate morphemes, we can support skilled reading! Which of these strategies have you tried with your students? #literacy #education #scienceofreading

Students won't remember: -The blending drill instructions you stumbled over, -The week you had to reteach a phonics pattern because it just wasn't sticking, -When the principal dropped in for a surprise observation during your small group lesson, -That you needed an extra day to work through all your literacy progress monitoring. 🚫 We don’t want you to think that explicit instruction means students are just listening to the teacher talk through the lesson. For our instruction to be rigorous, it actually needs to be engaging! To quote the great Anita Archer, “Learning is not a spectator sport!” Instructional scaffolds can be a great tool for engaging all learners. And of course, what’s essential for our striving students is often helpful for all the other students too! Here are a few examples: ➡️ Verbal Engagement: Teach a peer how to decode a word. ➡️ Written Engagement: Write the answer on a whiteboard and hold it up for the teacher to see. ➡️ Kinesthetic Engagement: Stand up if the word has a short vowel, sit down if the word had a long vowel. ⚠️ A word of caution on pacing guides: ✅ Pacing guides can be a really useful tool for staying on track throughout the school year! These guides give you a birds eye view of your curriculum, and help you plan your instruction to ensure students get the core content they need. 🚫 However, pacing guides don't know the strengths and needs of the students in your classroom. These guides aren't responding to learning gaps, universal screening data, or your most recent progress monitoring. This year, we're giving you permission to take your pacing guides with a grain of salt! Structured literacy doesn't skip over unlearned skills, but practices skills to mastery. #literacy #structuredliteracy #education

Summary: Once children have learned to decode, reading comprehension of texts at any level depends more on background knowledge than the use of isolated or generalized skills.
