🎉Exciting news for Ohio! 🎉 Governor Mike DeWine announced that the state has secured a $60 million Comprehensive Literacy State Development grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This funding will empower Ohio teachers with the training and resources needed to deliver effective literacy instruction using the science of reading, helping students strengthen their reading and writing skills. “As all of our schools in Ohio become fully aligned with the Science of Reading, it is critical that our teachers have the right training and resources to properly teach their students how to read using this groundbreaking method,” said DeWine. A big thank you to Moriah Balingit, early childhood education reporter at the AP (Associated Press) for highlighting our Leading Men Fellowship! Her article, “Black male teachers are a rarity in preschools. This pioneering program wants to change that,” spotlights our Baltimore cohort at Dorothy I. Height Elementary, where Fellows provide evidence-based literacy support to pre-kindergarten students. The article features Davontez Johnson, a Leading Men Fellow and student at the University of Maryland Global Campus. After completing the LMF Ascend Training Institute this summer, where he trained for the classroom, Davontez has fully immersed himself in the school community, singing the morning greeting song with students each day. Davontez had this to say about his decision to become a Leading Men Fellow: “I really thought it was a great opportunity. Because I know if I saw someone like me, you know, in pre-K, I’d be pretty excited. You don’t see a lot of young Black males.” We’re looking forward to the 2024-2025 school year and the positive impact our Fellows will continue to make across the country! Article: https://lnkd.in/g_bpwHYt A special thank you to The Washington Post, Yahoo News, U.S. News and World Report, Canadian Press and UK Times for picking up this amazing story! #Baltimore #LMF #BlackEducators #ChildrensLiteracy #Maryland #TheLiteracyLab

Nearly 60,000 teens under 18 are incarcerated in juvenile facilities across the U.S., many struggling with reading and writing proficiency, according to the ACLU. In 2002, NYC educator Rebecca Howlett founded Literacy for Incarcerated Teens (LIT) to establish a library in a juvenile detention center in the Bronx. Shortly after, she teamed up with librarians Karlan Sick and Jessica Fenster-Sparber to expand this mission—creating quality school libraries in New York City’s juvenile detention centers and non-secure facilities for youth. Reading and literacy are universal rights for all individuals. The Literacy Lab is thankful for LIT’s vital work in providing incarcerated young people with access to books and programs that foster literacy skills and a love for reading.
