  • We recently had opportunity to partner with The Garland Company, Inc. on an Ohio Department of Transportation building envelope improvement project. The Masonry Standard Company LLC was contracted to replace all the joint sealant at a portion of the building's exterior façade.   These joints included masonry expansion joints, window perimeter joints, and window glass glazing seals.   New high-performance joint sealant was used at these joints to waterproof these transition areas from water infiltration.   We are reminded constantly with these important waterproofing projects that the 90%-1% rule is always a challenge for us to combat as a building envelope repair/restoration contractor.   What is this 90%-1% rule?? It says that "90% of all water intrusion problems occur within 1% of the total building or structure exterior surface area"   This 1% area usually are at; - Transitions between two different building materials - Designed (or undesigned) joints for expansion/contraction - Building envelope penetrations - Change in height or plane of building envelope.    These small areas are all opportunities for water to find a way in thru failed joints or improperly detailed transitions (And cause BIG problems!). In most cases, it is improper/lack of waterproofing install or preparation of substrate that is the root cause.   The Masonry Standard Company understands the details and is always ready for the opportunity to overcome & fix this 1% of the building envelope so the building is 100% waterproofed! Thank you to Sean, Ricky, & Kevin for another quality job! and thank you Skyworks LLC for providing manlifts to perform this elevated work. www.themasonrystandard.com #jointsealant #waterproofing #columbusohio #masonryrepair #masonryrestoration #garland

  • Many people have asked us "How did we come up with our company name: The Masonry Standard Company?" It’s a little different. We agree. We are a little different.   It really stemmed from a book's underlying lessons I read earlier in my career called "The Score Takes Care of Itself"; A book about Bill Walsh and his unique leadership & teamwork philosophies & processes, and their successful results.    For people who don't know Bill Walsh, he was the SF 49ers football head coach in the 1980's when they were an NFL dynasty winning multiple Super Bowls. For a kid growing up in Youngstown OH in the 80's with the 49ers owned by a local businessman, SF 49ers were a big deal! They represented success & class (and were damn good!)   Coach Walsh adopted the worst team in football in the late 70's with the 49ers. But he believed in a system that thru his experience and methodology, he can make his football team a success. Many thought he was out of his mind, but his atypical processes proved to be successful. Walsh turned around the 49ers from worst to first (Super Bowl Champs) in a matter of 2 years time.   Coach Walsh came up with a philosophy for the 49ers organization to lead them to be successful in many aspects of a NFL franchise. This system was called "The Standard of Performance". It wasn't just X's & O's, it was organizational philosophy that guided the franchise from the quarterback to the equipment staff, to the person answering the phones, everyone was part of the system, and everyone was accountable to do their job and represent the 49ers thru Walsh's ideology. The Standard of Performance was the football equivalent of a quality assembly line process to build a quality car.   The thought of a developed processes for everyone to see-understand-implement on a day-to-day basis was very intriguing to me. Especially in the chaotic world that can be a construction company. If you can get everyone on the same page on the process & expectations, and get results that everyone buys into, expects, and demands, this was my kind of process to learn more about and put it to practice.   So fast-forward to last year when we started the company.  Thru trial & error of naming the company, the name The Masonry Standard Company came about thru Bill Walsh's philosophy name. The name is just a name... but "The Standard" philosophy represents what we try to strive for and improve on each day. We know if we do the little things right, and constantly strive to improve: The Score will Take Care of itself!   It truly is what guides the company in everything we do and why we do it, how we do it, and what we do in management, production, and administrative duties. And one phrase represents that: The Standard of Performance. #masonryrepair #masonryrestoration #columbusohio #thescoretakescareofitself #standardofperformance

  • The Masonry Standard Company recently partnered with Otterbein University to perform masonry repairs & improvements to Memorial Stadium on campus to get ready for the busy Fall sports season with the Cardinals football & soccer teams.   The stadium structure was experiencing severe staining from long-term exposure to moisture infiltrating the walls. The walls developed cracked mortar joints and also some of the CMU themselves cracked from ongoing moisture exposure.   The MSC began with a general pressure cleaning of the stadium stands & seating areas. We also cleaned the CMU walls to remove the severe moisture staining with the help of a biocide detergent.    The masonry repairs comprised of replacing split-face CMU units that were cracked from ongoing exposure to moisture. 100% of the mortar joints of the stadium wall were repointed to complete the repairs.   We completed the improvements & waterproofing with new joint sealant in the masonry control joints & applied a breathable, transparent sealer at the CMU walls to prevent moisture permeating into the wall & mitigate unsightly staining that comes with chronic moisture exposure.   We appreciate the opportunity to partner with local colleges & schools to keep Central Oho campus structures looking great! Go Cardinals!   Thank you to our vendors who assisted us on this project to get quality results; OBERFIELDS LLC & D/2 Biological Detergents. www.themasonrystandard.com #masonryrepair #masonryrestoration #otterbein #columbusohio

  • We recently received our new company T-shirts hot off the press for us to wear around town while restoring & building Columbus. It seems you are not a legit construction company unless you have the company T-shirt to prove it. Part of our company mission is to be a positive & contributing partner in our community of Central Ohio to make it a better place to live & work. Besides restoring/repairing buildings to help our communities thrive, part of our mission is to support local companies & their causes we believe in.    A cause near & dear to our heart is Autism Awareness. Many Central Ohio businesses support autism in different ways to show support & uplift autistic individuals of all ages and their families. We try to do our part as well.   The company T-shirts we purchased are made by #TheAwesomeCompany. They employ autistic adults to design & create their awesome T-shirts. Thank you to all of the great people involved at The Awesome Co. to make The Masonry Standard Co. employees look Awesome!   Next time you or your company are needing T-shirts or other printed swag, keep The Awesome Company in mind. https://lnkd.in/gun_5dwN If you need an awesome masonry company, The Masonry Standard Co. is a great choice!   If you want to learn more about Autism Awareness & how to get involved to help support and assist those in need, a great resource is Autism Speaks: https://lnkd.in/eZY-Kne #masonryrestoration #masonryrepair #columbusohio #autismspeaks #autismawareness #awesomecompany

  • Masonry restoration projects usually entail matching existing materials to create seamless repairs. Brick building exteriors in need of repairs are no exception.   Finding the right brick match usually comes down to 3 main factors to contend with the existing brick type; * Color/Blend * Texture * Size   The Masonry Standard Co have had a few jobs lately to go thru this process to find the right brick match. This process is one of my favorites! This process includes visiting brickyards to walk and scavenge thru different brick cubes & loose brick piles to find potential options that may be the "right" match.   If you're in the masonry business and like me, this is like a kid walking thru a toy store checking out different types of brick and imagining laying the brick and what the different brick would look like on a building.   Most people don't realize how many different types of brick and sizes are out there for new brick and salvaged brick markets. There's a lot!   Brick is unlike any building material in the world. So simple in makeup & methodology (one of the oldest manufactured building materials), but with some creativity and craftsmanship, individual brick put together collectively can create some of the most elegant and awesome structures the world has ever saw when installed in different patterns and orientations.   The Masonry Standard Company is a great match for customers looking for that seamless masonry repair and pursuit of the perfect brick match. Remember, the best repairs are ones that people don't even notice when it's done.    The creativity and craftsmanship of the masonry materials installed speak for itself. Thank you to our brick supplier partners; Columbus Builders Supply Inc, Reading Rock, Inc (CCL), Hamilton Parker, Snyder Brick & Block for allowing us to walk their yards for the right brick match & helping us thru this process. • The Masonry Standard Co recently completed a comprehensive facade restoration project for the Bexley United Methodist Church. This project included facade cleaning to remove heavy biological growth and soiling from the stone elements. Special care was taken to test different cleaning detergents & methods prior to the project to use the gentlest means possible to get desired results, but not damage stone and other surrounding materials. Test samples were performed to determine the best results. Masonry facades & their materials are enduring, but need some attention every now & then to bring back the beauty of the masonry materials that may be hidden behind years of environmental stains & soiling. The Masonry Standard Company is the "Standard" for masonry cleaning expertise & results. We look forward to promoting the masonry craftmanship & its beauty one project at a time. Thank you R.L. Wurz for supplying the masonry cleaning materials for this project. www.themasonrystandard.com #masonrycleaning #masonryrestoration #bexleyohio

  • The Masonry Standard Co. recently had opportunity to partner with Phinney Industrial Roofing at Schottenstein Arena at The Ohio State University to repair water leaks at select roof areas of the home of the Buckeyes.    The brick walls, adjacent to terrace roofs, originally were not detailed correctly for proper thru-wall flashing methods & materials. This lack of attention allowed wind-driven rain to infiltrate the effected brick walls & damaged interior ceiling finishes in the process.   The Masonry Standard Company was contracted to install new profiled, stainless steel flashing within the existing brick walls at the roof terrace areas of the arena.   This repair requires careful select demo of existing brick at base of the wall to insert & detail the new metal flashing. Attention to detail is a must to make sure overlaps, terminations, and end dams are correctly installed to seal the system against any water intrusion.   Finally, new identical matching brick (Thank you Hamilton Parker !) were installed over the new flashing to make a seamless new & existing final product that is now water-tight (and looks great)!  We didn't forget installing new tube weeps to complete the functioning flashing system!   Unfortunately, thru-wall flashing install during original construction is a common issue in modern buildings because of the lack of understanding and detailing by the original installers to ensure a water-tight system.   The good thing is that these issues can be resolved with a knowledgeable contractor to retro-repair these issues that takes pride in their work & understands the details to seal walls correctly so water does not infiltrate the masonry wall. The Masonry Standard Company appreciates this opportunity and look forward to sealing up more masonry walls in the future! www.themasonrystandard.com #columbusmasonry #theohiostateuniversity #masonryrepair #masonryrestoration #waterproofing #throughwallflashing

  • It's tough for our crews to work outdoors in the current scorching weather we are encountering in Central Ohio. Hot temperatures and sun's rays are brutal and zap a person's energy from trying to be in peak performance. The human body's protection measures to combat the excessive heat is staying hydrated with water & finding shade when possible.   We perform a lot of mortar joint repointing in the masonry restoration business. It turns out that newly-installed mortar is not all that different than us when it comes to surviving & enduring the heat. We are currently working on Ohio State University's campus on a repointing project, and are utilizing proper measures to make sure mortar joints stay hydrated during the curing process.   Newly pointed mortar requires constant hydration to cure correctly, and not dry out prematurely. Excessive drying out during the first couple days will cause mortar to crack & have low strength. There is a high probability that the mortar will fail prematurely and not perform as intended in the wall.   Fresh installed repointing mortar requires at least 72 hours of being moist while it cures in the masonry joint. This sometimes requires us to return to site after-hours and on the weekends to wet the wall down to keep mortar from drying out.   A trick we stole from concrete finishers is to drape burlap over newly-installed mortar joints and soak the burlap to provide adequate moisture over the masonry to help from drying out and also provide shade from the sun's direct rays.   We know the work is not done once the mortar gets pointed into the wall. Work is still needed in the curing process to ensure quality & performance in the finished product. These are the types of details that The Masonry Standard Co. pays attention to so our work is top quality and will perform for many years to come as intended.   Do you know someone that needs masonry restoration or masonry repair, give The Masonry Standard Company a call to take a look at it. www.themasonrystandard.com #masonryrestoration #masonryrepair #themasonrystandard #columbusohio #theohiostateuniversity

  • The Masonry Standard Company had opportunity recently to partner with Capital University to seal leaky aluminum punched windows at Battelle Hall. Based on the initial investigation phase, the existing joint sealant between the perimeter of the windows & the brick veneer was found to be badly deteriorated and past its useful life to serve its purpose to keep water out.   On rain events, rainwater was dripping to the interior of the building, thru these window joints, and was a nuisance to the building occupants.   We removed & replaced the joint sealant with new high-performance silicone sealant supplied by our vendor R.L. Wurz. Doing so, while working over a sensitive glass atrium where access was a sensitive detail. These windows are now ready for any weather that Mother Nature can throw at it.    The MSC is always up for the challenge to figure out source of water leaks and strategies & methods to stop them (& have happy customers!) www.themasonrystandard.com #bexleyohio #jointsealant #columbuswaterproofing #columbusmasonry
