The Music Industry Podcast with Mark Sutherland
About us
The Money Trench (TMT) is The Music Industry Podcast from Mark Sutherland, exec producer Mike Walsh, Tape Notes and supported by PPL. Each Monday, Mark dissects the biggest music industry news stories of the week, in the company of one of the industry’s most influential executives. Followed by a deep dive into that exec’s career in music, including their thoughts on where we’re at and where we’re heading. There is also a weekly newsletter – featuring Mark's take on that week’s hottest stories and our latest episode, plus an exclusive heads-up on what’s coming up next. If you’re wondering where the name The Money Trench comes from, it’s a reference to the classic Hunter S Thompson misquote about the music business being “a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs” – before adding: “Of course, there’s also a negative side…” TMT is here to look at all sides of the music business and celebrate the most exciting industry on the planet. Don’t start your music week without it. TMT is supported by PPL, who are celebrating 90 years in business this year. TMT supports Earth/Percent, the music industry’s climate foundation. Co-founded by Brian Eno, Earth/Percent works with scientists, researchers, and activists, to help the music industry support the most impactful climate organisations around the world. TMT is also supported by Aimless Play and Sennheiser microphones. TMT’s production partner is Tape Notes and the podcast is exec produced by Mike Walsh. TMT music is provided by Tom A Smith. TMT logo design by Junkhead Studio. For media inquiries, please contact Fourth Pillar. Please contact mike@themoneytrench.com for guest suggestions and further info.

Whilst in LA last week for MUSEXPO, we recorded a very special episode of TMT. We headed out to Van Nuys to meet Hopeless Records founder and punk rock pioneer Louis Posen. He has made a profound impact on the industry through his A&R instincts, his philanthropy and his own remarkable personal journey, having started to lose his sight aged just 19, so it’s an episode you won’t want to miss. Tune in! Los Angeles location recording, broadcast and production facilities provided by Sounds Fishy. There’s something about this business that keeps people going – and this week’s TMT guest is typical of that attitude. Nick Stewart is a unique character and has some incredible tales to tell from his storied career, starting at island in 1979 when he signed U2 and taking him through the likes of EG, Polygram, BMG and Rhino. He’s now founder and CEO of his own Nick Stewart & Associates company – and is planning a new record label with some other equally legendary industry veterans. Can they do it again? Tune in to find out (and for stories of scything down Bob Marley in a kickabout)… Tune un here - https://pods.to/tmt36 #themoneytrench #musicindustry #podcast #islandrecords Mark Sutherland Mike Walsh

This week’s TMT guest has some serious business to discuss. Black Lives in Music CEO Dr Charisse Beaumont (DMus) is a leading voice in the fight to improve diversity across the music industry and she is crystal clear about what the industry needs to do next. But she also has her own fascinating story to tell – for example, it’s not often we have a guest on TMT who spent a year in Nepal working as a missionary. The Money Trench - The Music Industry Podcast with Mark Sutherland reposted this
Excellent new episode this week. Mark Sutherland sits down with artist and industry activist Kate Nash. Kate does not hold back on artists’ rights and what you should do if you are not specifically working on making the music industry better for artists ….. you can probably guess her suggestion… The Money Trench - The Music Industry Podcast with Mark Sutherland
This week’s TMT guest pulls no punches in our latest episode. Kate Nash has some cautionary tales from the early days of her career (as well as the more upbeat story of how Foundations became a pan-generational smash), but she’s also a passionate advocate for grassroots venues and artists’ rights. It’s essential listening and it certainly should help you shake off that BRITs hangover and start making things better for everybody… Listen here - https://pods.to/tmt34 #themoneytrench #musicpodcast #podcast #musicindustry #katenash Mark Sutherland Mike Walsh

As Director of Music Platforms at Marshall Group, this week’s TMT guest knows all about being loud. Steve Tannett has been immersed in the biz since the ‘70s, from being a member of first-wave punk band Menace to working with Miles Copeland at IRS Records, and has war stories involving everyone from REM and The Police to Black Sabbath and Ginger Baker. And Steve’s still making big moves, turning Marshall Records into a real independent force with the likes of Nova Twins and The Molotovs. It all makes for a great episode, so make sure you tune in… Listen here - https://pods.to/tmt33 #themoneytrench #musicpodcast #musicindustry Mark Sutherland Mike Walsh

This week’s TMT guest knows a thing or two about spotting talent (he even found Shola Ama singing in Hammersmith tube station). Ferocious Talent MD Kwame Kwaten has had an amazing career as an artist, producer, remixer, manager and label exec and has the jaw-dropping stories (Prince! Mick Jagger!) to show for it. He also has incredible insight into the changing face of artist management and where the biz is going next, so make sure you tune in for this one… Listen here - https://pods.to/tmt32 #themoneytrench #musicindustry #musicpodcast Mark Sutherland Mike Walsh

This week’s Money Trench guest turns out to be something of a secret party animal. You know Peter Leathem OBE as the CEO of TMT’s sponsor PPL, a music industry stalwart and the man who has boosted the collection society’s revenues to unprecedented heights. We talk about all of that, of course, but also about his love of going out and a pop star selfie, plus he divulges his unexpected connection to Madonna’s ‘Sex’ book. You may never look at the world of neighbouring rights in quite the same way again, so do tune in… Listen here: https://pods.to/tmt31 #themoneytrench #musicindustry #ppl #musicpodcast Mark Sutherland Mike Walsh
