I’ve been thinking a lot recently about how questions can help us learn and connect, especially in our overheated political climate. In times like this, it can feel pointless (even scary) to try to have productive conversations with those on the “other side” (whichever side that is). On Sunday, my friend and fellow author, Landon Mascareñaz, reached out to suggest that, now more than ever, our country could use some quality questions to ask each other, especially across the political divide. Thanks to his prompting and our brainstorming, here are 5 questions you can ask an “other” right now to start moving beyond division and towards greater understanding and repair. Our hope for an open future that brings all of us together requires that we reject political, civic, and rhetorical violence that pulls us apart. We must examine the paths that led us here, the choices we make moving forward, and how we can co-create a world where all people thrive together in a vibrant democracy.
