Last month, the nation watched with worry as wildfires burned in LA. The fires burned homes, displaced families, and spewed toxic gasses into the air, presenting immediate breathing difficulties for those in the area. It was one of the most destructive fire events to hit California, and it was exacerbated by climate change. When tragedies happen, it's easy to feel like there's nothing we can do, but as designers, builders, and leaders of the industry, we have plans to put into action: Step 1) Create an airtight, fire-resilient design with Passive House. Keep out toxic smoke and embers, preventing interior destruction and making it more likely that the structure will survive unharmed. Keep those out of the evacuation area safe inside with clean, healthy air. Step 2) Lower the emissions of our built environment by creating efficient, electrified designs that decarbonize our energy grid and slow the pace of climate change. Maintain indoor comfort while doing this, because with Passive House, comfort and efficiency go hand-in-hand. Step 3) Spread the word. Every Passive House built or renovated in your neighborhood makes your community more resilient when disaster strikes.
