Although much of The Patterson Foundation’s efforts in philanthropy are focused on strengthening Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota counties, with 70 percent of the Foundation’s funds staying within this four-county region, The Patterson Foundation’s approach to philanthropy works beyond traditional geographic boundaries, tapping into expansive networks and movements working toward shared aspirations. The Patterson Foundation learns insights and best practices from these broader networks, which are applied to strengthen initiatives locally. Furthermore, these new networks serve as a conduit to other people, organizations, and communities around the world working toward these same goals. Connecting these initiatives to broader networks creates new opportunities to share innovations and learnings developed in The Patterson Foundation’s home region far and wide. Collectively, the overall movement generates lasting impact regionally, nationally, and globally.

The 2025 TPF Study Away class has safely returned to Indiana after a productive week, capped by a Knowledge Sharing Session. Here are some of the highlights from this session: Leadership – Students learned that leadership is not just about directing others but inspiring and supporting them. It involves building trust, communicating effectively, and adapting to different situations to guide teams toward shared goals. Willingness – Through activities like the Pop-Up Neighbor through Laundry, students discovered the power of stepping out of their comfort zones. When they visited local organizations and were given the opportunity to be a consultant, they learned that it's okay not to have all the answers and that approaching conversations with curiosity is essential for growth. Readiness – Students discovered that being ready doesn't require knowing everything. They learned that asking questions and engaging thoughtfully fosters personal and collective growth, ultimately leading to better outcomes. Capacity – Leadership thrives on diverse perspectives, teamwork, and creative problem-solving to drive meaningful change. Culture – Engaging with different perspectives helped students appreciate the value of building relationships and meaningful conversations. Observing how shared spaces like The Bay brought people together highlighted the role of culture in promoting collaboration. They also learned TPF glossary words like passionaries and possibilitarians! This experience helped students see that leadership is about more than just taking charge—it's about fostering trust, connection, and growth. They learned that being willing to step outside their comfort zones, ready to adapt, and able to build relationships with diverse people are all crucial elements of effective leadership. They also discovered the importance of culture in shaping collaborative environments and how each individual's unique strengths contribute to the success of the group. #TPFStudyAway #Philanthropy Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy Debra Jacobs Pamela Clark

Grateful for the opportunity to present an overview of community conversations to students from Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Through community conversations, we’ve gained valuable insights that have shaped the DeSoto Ahead initiative and contributed to the development of the DeSoto County Public Capital Report. These discussions have strengthened connections, identified community needs, and helped pave the way for future progress. A huge thank you to The Patterson Foundation for investing in this work and our community! Your support makes a lasting impact. What would YOU choose to do on your Spring Break? Well, Reese Gheen & Ryne Mills, Montana Crossman, and Benjamin Rocks are choosing to spend a week in Sarasota immersed in the world of philanthropy. Through a collaboration with The Patterson Foundation and Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, TPF Immersive Impact: Through Engagement and Consulting provides undergraduate and graduate students attending the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy a professional growth opportunity using TPF's initiatives. All 10 students' semester-long course culminates with a weeklong spring study away experience with TPF in Sarasota. This opportunity demonstrates how TPF's unique position of having an unfettered charter allows it to undertake work in ways others are not doing, cannot do, or will not do. After Monday morning's engaging presentation with the one and only Michael Oxman and Larry Clark on consulting best practices, Cheri and I embarked on a bit of a trip with four of the IU students working with Digital Access for All to engage on two sites: one with Sarasota Technology Users Group (STUG), a nonprofit refurbishing and redistributing donated devices to those in need and the Women's Resource Center (WRC), a nonprofit that provides women of all ages and backgrounds with support, resources, and services. On Friday morning, Reese Gheen, Ryne Mills will present their consulting observations and recommendations to strengthen STUG's work, and Montana Crossman & Benjamin Rocks will share their own with a focus on WRC. I think Cheri Coryea would agree that we've got a great group with energy and positivity — true passionaries and possibilitarians! Pamela Clark Ronnie Plasters Debra Jacobs
