We’re reflecting on an incredible day at Orlando STEM Goes Red—a powerful initiative by the American Heart Association designed to ignite a passion for STEM in young women. Through mentorship, hands-on breakout sessions, and real-world exposure, students had the opportunity to see themselves as future scientists, engineers, and innovators. Dr. Alexa Canady made history as the first Black woman neurosurgeon in the United States. Still, her legacy goes beyond medicine—she dedicated her career to mentorship, advocacy, and increasing access to STEM education for Black students. Understanding the power of representation, she mentored young Black students and funded scholarships to help more underrepresented students enter the medical field. She knew that exposure and opportunity were key to breaking barriers and ensuring future generations had the tools to succeed in STEM. Benny's Bodega, a new school market at Kissimmee Elementary School, is now open to provide students and families with nutritious food. This initiative, a partnership between the Poinsette Foundation and Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, aims to reduce stigma and involve students in its operations. The market will operate twice a week, addressing the needs of the one in six children experiencing hunger in Central Florida.
