Here's my take on how veterans and civilians can build bridges over Veterans Day. Both civilians and veterans need to venture outside their TYFYS comfort zones. Civilians can start by asking veterans safe and simple questions: What did you do in the service? Where did you serve? What did you like best about your time in the military? What’s your fondest memory? The military, like other professions, has impenetrable jargon, and you might hear terms that you just don’t get. Asking, “Help me to understand _____” is a great way to find shared understanding. If you’d like to thank a veteran, specific words about their service mean much more than generalized declarations. Veterans must show courage and understanding, too: someone is trying to learn a bit more about you and how you served your country. Allowing people to learn about the military is vital to the common good and our national defense; it helps people make informed decisions about policies, elections, and military service.
