"Sometimes, you have to learn to be OK with not having answers." In November of 2023, Michelle experienced Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) while at home with her husband. In the hospital, Michelle was given an S-ICD due to her heart history. The cause of her SCA came back as idiopathic (unknown cause) ventricular fibrillation. “With an idiopathic [unknown] cause, you don’t really have a reason for why your SCA happened, which makes it extra scary,” says Michelle. For others who have had SCA, Michelle’s advice is to give yourself the time you need to heal. “There’s this narrative that you should just be grateful to be alive, and not focus on the trauma that an event like this causes,” says Michelle. “It’s been nearly a year and it’s still hard to accept that an event like that can happen seemingly out of nowhere. Give yourself time to heal, and let the people around you know that you need that time.” Read more about Michelle's story at https://lnkd.in/dVtMTAXj. 🏷️ #CallPushShock #CPRSavesLives #CPR #SuddenCardiacArrest #AED #SCA #SuddenCardiacArrestAwareness #SuddenCardiacArrestAwarenessMonth

I just finished booking my flight and hotel room for The SADS Foundation's upcoming conference in #Chicago. I'll be teaching a trauma-informed writing workshop called "Telling Your Heart Story" as the last session on Friday, helping participants connect to themselves and each other. There will be a #LightningFlowers signing afterward at the conference reception from 5-7pm. And we've got a big treat for you: my sister Christine Standefer and parents Mark Standefer and Judy Standefer will be joining us! If you're living with #SADS conditions in your family, please come.
Are you one of 77? That's the 77 families attending our 2024 International SADS Conference in Chicago this November ... including kids who'll be there for our special kids and teens program. Because of the incredible response we've had to our first in-person International Conference since 2020, we're extending our early-bird registration rates till September 30. That's because we want YOU and your whole family to be able to join us. Share this if you're attending ... and to join us, visit https://lnkd.in/gdsP9tzG.

Thousands of youth are stricken by sudden cardiac arrest each year. It’s the leading cause of death on school campuses and the #1 killer of student athletes. You can triple their chance of survival by promptly giving CPR and using the nearest AED. 🏷️ #CallPushShock #CPRAEDWeek #YouCanSaveALife #ForSarah

Why do we need new medications for #longqtsyndrome ? Part 1 Isla is one of many patients who relied heavily on #mexiletine and as well as beta blockers. If no one has told you, Mexiletine is an awful drug. Mexiletine caused Isla debilitating stomach cramps which caused so much pain she needed oral morphine PRN at home. Many patients list the GI side effects of even small doses of Mexiletine as the main reason they could not tolerate the drug. For many patients I have spoken to, the benefit does not outweigh the risk and they prefer not to take it. Thryv Therapeutics Inc. The SADS Foundation

When you have Long QT Syndrome (#LQTS), there are certain medications, supplements and drugs that you'll need to avoid - because they can make the QT interval even longer, which can lead to dangerous heart rhythms. That's why we recommend using the CredibleMeds website (and phone app!) for the latest info on which drugs are QT safe, and which should be avoided. You can take this with you to appointments and the pharmacy to help guide you. This site is vetted by a committee of scientists and is constantly updating their resources! In this video, we teamed up with Dr. Will Heise, who explains how CredibleMeds.org works - including where you can get a complete, printable list of drugs to avoid. When Jadale was nine, he experienced his very first symptom of CPVT – a terrifying episode in which he lost consciousness in the rain and had to drag himself across a parking lot to find help. Due to a lapse in insurance, Jadale was unable to access his medication for three months. That’s when he went into Sudden Cardiac Arrest. “I was in a medically induced coma, and spent two months in the hospital afterwards,” says Jadale. “But since then, since getting consistent on my treatment and having surgery, I’ve had no episodes or symptoms.” To those who are newly diagnosed, Jadale’s advice is to focus on the positive. Jadale is now a D2 athlete in shotput and discus at Roosevelt University in Chicago, and he’s sharing his story to help other young people who have his diagnosis feel less alone.
