Biotech IT Leadership Recruiting Expert | Delivering ROI to Biotech companies via their perfect IT leader (SVP, CIO, CDO, CDIO, CISO) | Host of the Biotech Bytes Podcast

With Boards of Directors thirsty for AI and Data Governance knowledgeable IT leaders, why leave your IT searches (CIO, CDO, VP, CISO, CTO, etc.) to chance? Here are some reasons senior-level IT candidates tell us they are reluctant to apply to roles posted online: “Ghost” positions: Candidates have told me they hesitate to apply, wondering if a role is real or not. Commitment concerns: Most candidates wonder if a company is committed to a position when they see a crucial role posted online soliciting applications. Reluctance to submit resumes online: For senior-level roles, candidates feel unsettled submitting their resume online for the first time since the start of their careers. Sense of exclusivity: Senior-level candidates like the sense of exclusivity. With LinkedIn counting the number of applicants for a role, it makes candidates feel the company will never see their resume and that the role is not important. https://lnkd.in/e2mvK9nQ

I had an insightful conversation with Steven Swan from The Swan Group, where we discussed my generative AI framework for Life Science use cases and the current trends in automating clinical writing, a significant demand area aimed at reducing the time spent on drafting documentation for FDA submissions. I shared some insights on how rapid first drafts can lead to quicker FDA approvals and faster market entry for drugs. We also tackle how to measure the return on investment for these innovations. It's clear that the conversation around hybrid work isn't going away anytime soon. As an executive recruiter at The Swan Group, specializing in life sciences and IT roles within biotech and pharma, I see the reality of these shifts daily. The debate around "hushed hybrid" work environments – where employees work remotely despite official RTO directives – is heating up. I talk to talented professionals who excel in their roles, whether they're in the office or working from home. This flexibility isn't just a holdover from the pandemic; it's a trend that's gaining traction. We must consider the impact on recruitment and retention. Top IT talent in life sciences and pharma often value the ability to work remotely. Ignoring this preference can risk losing high-caliber professionals who drive innovation within these critical sectors. But there's a balance to strike. Allowing deviations from company policy without clear guidelines can lead to inconsistencies and long-term issues. As we navigate this evolving landscape, it's crucial to develop strategies that accommodate employees' needs while maintaining organizational integrity. Engaging in open dialogue with our teams and understanding their preferences can help us build a more resilient and dynamic workforce. Let's continue this conversation and explore how we can create flexible yet structured environments that benefit both organizations and the amazing talent driving our industries forward. ____________________________________________ Hi, I'm Steve Swan 👋 CEO and Principal of The Swan Group, an Executive Search Firm carving a niche in the Pharma/Biotech industries with a keen focus on IT. Managing the balance between work and parenting is undeniably challenging for single parents. Finding time for job interviews can be particularly strenuous. A recent Careerminds poll revealed that nearly half of single parents (44%) have had to decline job interviews due to scheduling challenges. Caregivers overall comprise a significant portion of the workforce (73%). Throughout my 25+ years in recruitment, notably within the life sciences, pharmaceutical, and medical device sectors, I've observed this recurring problem. Exceptional candidates are often misaligned with roles due to inflexible interview processes, placing undue pressure on them to "make it work." It's important to note that addressing this issue doesn’t translate to enabling poor work ethics. Single parents are often among the most dedicated and motivated to prove their worth. HR leaders and hiring managers: consider the benefits of more flexible and accommodating interview schedules for single parents. By doing so, you open the door to a larger, highly competent talent pool. Creating an inclusive recruitment process not only supports potential candidates but also enhances your organization’s ability to attract and retain top-tier professionals in critical roles. Let's work together to align opportunities with the realities faced by many in our workforce. Let's cut to the chase—if you're missing out on the job offers you want, there's a reason. And I’ve seen it time and again in my 25 years of recruiting in the life sciences, pharmaceutical, and medical device sectors. First up, your resume. It needs to be impeccable. Get someone you trust to give it a once-over, or better yet, invest in professional help to reformat and revise it. Attention to detail is crucial; nothing kills your chances faster than a poorly presented resume. Next, interview preparation is non-negotiable. You must go in armed with the right questions and an understanding of the company and your interviewer. This shows genuine interest and sets a strong first impression. Finally, follow-up is key. Hiring managers are swamped, and a well-timed, thoughtful follow-up demonstrates your eagerness and professionalism without annoying them. Want to turn things around? Consider working with a recruiter. At The Swan Group, my team and I provide candid feedback on your resume and presentation, coach you on interview techniques, and ensure you cover all bases throughout the hiring process. Ready to get serious about landing that next role? Reach out, and let's get you positioned for success. ________________________ Hi, I'm Steve Swan 👋 CEO and Principal of The Swan Group, an Executive Search Firm carving a niche in the Pharma/Biotech industries with a keen focus on IT. Recognizing and appreciating employees is crucial for retaining talent in any industry. But how do we make employees feel genuinely appreciated across different generations? Shawnee Irmen-De Anda, Chief People Officer at Thriveworks, says, “Employee recognition programs really are a win-win.” In my 25+ years in recruitment, I've seen how tailored appreciation impacts retention. "Employee of the Month" programs spotlight one person but can leave others feeling overlooked. The key is understanding generational preferences. Baby Boomers may value formal awards ceremonies. Gen Z appreciates public shoutouts on social media. Understanding Gen X's ideal recognition is also important. In my experience placing IT professionals across various sectors, companies that adapt their recognition programs to diverse needs see better retention. It's about creating an inclusive recognition framework that acknowledges everyone's efforts. After all, a well-appreciated workforce is essential for sustainable success in recruitment and retention.
