Today we are celebrating our Board Member @katie.e.brennan for officially launching their campaign run for the New Jersey General Assembly. “I’m running for the New Jersey General Assembly! I’m running to speak truth to power, fight for those who feel forgotten by their representatives, and to bring the fight for affordable housing to the State House. Let’s do this!”

About us
The Waterfront Project, Inc., is a legal center offering free civil legal representation, assistance and advocacy to the poor, homeless and disenfranchised. Our mission is to provide meaningful access to the New Jersey civil justice system for low-income individuals and families residing in Hudson County. We assist clients in a variety of legal areas, including landlord-tenant law, contract negotiations, estate planning, social security, family law and more. We also offer a certified Housing Counseling Program, where our trained staff provides free advice and referrals to renters and homeowners on various housing-related matters, including landlord-tenant issues, foreclosures and home-buying. Volunteer attorneys are always needed. We offer continuing legal education (CLE) seminars to help train our volunteers while providing the opportunity for attorneys to meet their annual CLE requirements.

Voting in your local elections is CRUCIAL to helping support stabilized housing, affordable, housing, and to help those currently facing homelessness. Whether you consider yourself a political person or not, your vote on the smallest level can make the BIGGEST impact for the communities you care about. The decision makers are in charge, but luckily we do get a say in who those people are. Don’t forget to vote in this upcoming election, not just for yourself, but for everyone else.

On April 22nd 2024, the Supreme Court of the United States heard the case of Johnson v. Grants Pass. On June 28th, a decision was announced: people experiencing homelessness can be arrested and fined for sleeping outside when there are no safe alternatives. Johnson v. Grants Pass is a court case originally filed in 2018 that determined it is cruel and unusual punishment to arrest or ticket people for sleeping outside when they have no other safe place to go. The case started in Grants Pass, Oregon when the city began issuing tickets to people sleeping in public, even when there were not enough safe, accessible shelter beds. Wages are too low, and rent is too high which is causing our homeless populations to increase. Now more than ever we need investment in resources that keep people in their homes, and we need to do it now.

It recognizes the history, resilience, and rich traditions of Native American communities. It is important because it promotes awareness of the ongoing struggles that Indigenous peoples face, acknowledges their unique perspectives and ways of life, and highlights the need for reconciliation and respect for their rights and sovereignty. #indigenouspeoplesday serves as a platform for education, advocacy, and understanding of the diverse Indigenous cultures that enrich our society. There are several Indigenous tribes historically associated with the region now known as New Jersey. Some of these tribes include the Lenape
