The 98 is an early stage venture capital firm dedicated to funding technology businesses led by women. Women-led start-ups receive only 2% of venture capital dollars despite generating higher returns on invested capital and quicker exits. The 98 aims to change the funding ratio by providing exceptional women founders with capital, operating expertise and network resources to build great companies and generate superior returns. We are operating executives who work closely with our founders, using our experience to drive unique value. We are leading executives with decades of operating and investing experience, particularly in media, marketing, commerce and data analytics. We leverage our collective expertise to identify and support technology businesses led by women in commerce, media, health and wellness, finance and law.

They are selected objectively from the IT-Harvest Dashboard with three filters: Size:50-500 people. 1H 2024 growth: 15%. Then the top 150 by the IT-Harvest health metric.   These are vendors who are enjoying fast growth, have achieved product-market fit, and are in many cases under the radar of the big analyst firms.    We’re in the process of adding interviews and demos to the resource which will also be carried in the IT-Harvest Dashboard for access by security teams worldwide.

    The 98 is pleased to announce its recent investment in Strella. Strella uses data to enable smarter decision-making in the produce supply chain. Strella’s proprietary biochemical sensors detect and monitor the presence of ethylene gas, which indicates fruit and vegetable ripening. The company’s software uses this information to provide smarter produce management and quality control decision-making to minimize losses due to wastage.   Strella is the first mover in the produce ripening detection market. The produce retail industry is a very large market, with approximately $73.8B in annual retail sales in the US alone. Current practices with respect to ripening are inadequate, resulting in 23% of waste among the top produce categories on an annual basis. Strella offers its customers cost savings through a material reduction in waste across the supply chain and translates a portion of the savings into recurring revenue for the licensing of its technology.   Strella’s customers are both produce packers and retailers. Strella’s solution is currently deployed at Target and Sobey as well as at other retailers. Strella works with packers through its partnership with industry leading Agrofresh, as well as directly.   Strella’s founder and CEO is Katherine Sizov, who holds a molecular biology and chemistry degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Investors include Yamaha Motors Ventures and Google Ventures.

    Joining in to honor the memory of Susan Wojcicki on her sad and untimely passing. Susan was one of the best known women pioneers in digital media and technology, a true trailblazer who paved the way for so many other women. She was also formidable, as I experienced firsthand while at AOL and Nielsen. I have nothing but respect for her brilliance, her persistence and her resoluteness. She was a great leader, and she will be sorely missed.
