Last month, the Aurora Economic Opportunity Coalition, along with community partners and Aurora City employees, embarked on an enlightening trip to the NEWSED Community Development Corporation located in the Art District on Santa Fe. This video documents our visit to one of the few CDCs in the Denver Metro area that possesses decades of experience in working towards community revitalization through economic revitalization. Watch our video documenting our trip and witness how we gained invaluable insights from NEWSED, which we are excited to apply in NW Aurora. The Aurora Economic Opportunity Coalition would like to offer a hearty “Congratulations!” to our Social Determinants of Health Manager, Christo Luna, for being a recipient of a Bernie Valdez Award administered by CLLARO. This is the 29th year that CLARRO has given out this award, and Christo is one of six recipients chosen for demonstrating unwavering dedication to empowering Colorado Latinos and embodying CLARRO’s core values. The Colorado Latino Leadership, Advocacy & Research Organization (CLLARO) is a non-profit organization which exists to empower Latinos through leadership development, advocacy, and policy research to strengthen Colorado. The AEOC looks forward to continuing working with Christo as he continues to offer his passion and steadfast work ethic to the NW Aurora community.

On June 18th, The Aurora Economic Opportunity Coalition was joined by community partners and Aurora city employees when we visited NEWSED Community Development Corporation, within the Sante Fe Arts District, in order to learn about Community Development Corporations (CDCs). This trip was highly beneficial as NEWSED is one of the few CDC’s within the Denver Metro that possesses decades of experience in elevating communities through economic revitalization. We look forward to exercising much of this newly gained knowledge in our community of NW Aurora. On June the 7th, 2024, the Northwest Aurora Walmart grocery, located off East Colfax and Havana Street, permanently closed. In response to this troubling development, a community meeting has been scheduled so that NW Aurora residents may gather and discuss their concerns, struggles, and ideas for addressing this challenge. Many thanks to Adams County Government, Arapahoe County, Village Exchange Center The Migrant Response Network of NW Aurora, Aurora Wellness Community, and Walgreens for coming out yesterday to serve the NW Aurora community during the AEOC Health and Wellness Clinic! We had a great turnout from residents who made good use of the free vaccines, health screenings, great food, wellness supplies, and other services graciously being offered. We can't wait to do it all again in the future!
