Not everyone thrives in an office or clinic setting. Bridge clinicians provide clients with the opportunity to address their behavioral health concerns in the more familiar surroundings of their home or a public location. Oscar Fernandez serves as the Behavioral Health Specialist for the Intensive Mobile Treatment (IMT) Team, a community-based program at The Bridge. In this role, Oscar meets clients from diverse backgrounds throughout the city to provide supportive counseling, ensure their health and safety goals are met, and understand them without judgment. Oscar works with many individuals struggling with mental health and substance use issues who may be homeless, incarcerated, or institutionalized. Oscar has a deep understanding of how various circumstances can lead to individuals being misunderstood. He draws from his personal and professional experiences to go above and beyond in his role. At The Bridge, Oscar’s goal is to remind clients that the impossible is always possible. Oscar Fernandez earned his Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Psychology from CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice and plans to pursue a Master’s degree. He is also fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a professional wrestler and participates annually in the Ride For Life ALS Walk with his high school, the Community Health Academy of the Heights.

So just being that listening seems to really go a long way for them.” Neighborhood Navigators stems from the Manhattan District Attorney’s $6 million investment towards nonprofit the Bridge to establish outreach programs in four focus neighborhoods staffed by “peers” with similar life experiences. The initiative will run for roughly three years and officially kicked off this past February. Ortiz and Brass started in June and make up the Harlem team.
