New York Continues Efforts to Expand Access to Palliative Care Through Medicaid In 2023, Hospice & Palliative Care Association of New York State (HPCANYS), C-TAC, C-TAC Innovations, and TFA Analytics joined forces to create a set of policy recommendations aimed at improving #palliativecare access for adults, children, and caregivers across New York. Earlier access to #palliativecare and #supportivecare is not only the right thing to do for people going through #cancer, but it helps people live longer, improves quality of life for family caregivers, keeps people from going to the hospital for things they can manage at home, and it saves the person with cancer and the healthcare system money. Very rarely are all incentives aligned. So why don’t more people get access? Why is this not standard of care? My co-presenters and I explored 4 themes: 1. People with cancer aren’t aware they should be getting better care. 2. Clinicians don’t know enough about the services available to their patients to manage pain and other problems that arise with treatment. 3. Demands on clinician time and productivity make it difficult to insert palliative care into the clinical workflow. 4. Financial barriers create limited access to this necessary service. These are barriers we can and must overcome.
