Massachusetts is right to be proud of our climate leadership. But that alone won't guarantee that the climate tech companies that shape the future will grow and scale here. Michael Kearney and I took a break from texting about the Celtics and tried to capture why we need pass and build on the Mass Leads Act. Yes, its about jobs, but it's also about refusing to cede the future of these critical industries to states whose record on climate is spotty at best. Duck boats aren't a birthright and climate tech leadership isn't a given. Let's get to work and ensure the carbon free future is invented, scaled and built by Massachusetts. https://lnkd.in/eARSp9FU #ToughTech #ActOnCimate Engine Ventures The Engine Accelerator
Congratulations to Sublime Systems for reaching this incredible milestone, providing the first-ever low-carbon cement in a commercial application! WS Development's office building in the Seaport district of Boston will feature Sublime's breakthrough material in their indoor public area. This announcement illustrates what is possible when academia, incubator, and industry come together with common #ToughTech innovation goals. Engine Ventures and The Engine Accelerator are proud to be part of the Sublime System team's journey! #construction #cement #industrialdecarbonization #lowcarboncement #climateinnovation #KeepBuilding https://lnkd.in/gP3cJjVS

“Earth is a massive battery,” says Quaise Energy co-founder Matt Houde in a recent interview with Recharge News. The team at Quaise, an Engine Ventures portfolio company, combines physics-based solutions from the labs of MIT, specifically gyrotron technology, with the know-how of workers from the oil and gas sector to drill further into the Earth’s crust than anyone has ever drilled before. By generating electromagnetic waves to vaporize geological formations, Quaise aims to drill 12 miles deep to access unprecedented amounts of #geothermal energy. The result? Access to the largest source of power-dense clean energy on the Planet. Read more from Cosmo Sanderson below. https://lnkd.in/ekrVVRKW

Congratulations to Pascal – a startup developing high-efficiency, climate-friendly heat pumps, air conditioners and refrigerators based on solid refrigerants – on introducing its novel technology today and announcing an $8 million seed round, which Engine Ventures led. Water heating & cooling and refrigeration account for 50% of electricity use in commercial buildings and more than 70% in residential buildings. And today’s #HVAC technologies rely on #hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Pascal’s technology simultaneously reduces HVAC electrical loads while removing greenhouse-gas equivalent HFC emissions. Read more in today’s Axios Climate. Congratulations to Adam Slavney and the entire Pascal team. https://lnkd.in/d9yzCcSi

Last week, Engine Ventures was on the ground at TechCrunch Early Stage 2024, an event that illustrated the best in Boston’s vibrant tech community. The gathering kicked off with a Female Founder Breakfast, where Monique Guimond, Engine Ventures’ Vice President of Capital Formation, joined a conversation about AI’s impact on founders. Monique shared her belief that AI will be embedded into all Tough Tech company DNA moving forward for faster innovation, better analytics, and more nimble organizations. Thank you to Lily Lyman, Rudina Seseri, and Dominic-Madori Davis for sharing the stage. #TechCrunch #EarlyStage2024 #ToughTech #AI #tech

Very encouraging to see the host of commitments from the White House this week to modernize our nation’s electricity grid. To close the gap between clean energy producers and the skyrocketing demand for power, we must increase our nation’s distribution and transmission capacity multiple times over. The key question is how quickly can we do it, and these commitments build confidence that the pace of change is accelerating. Upgrading 100K miles of transmission lines over the next five years "by deploying modern grid technologies like high-performance conductors” and fast-tracking environmental review for reconductoring existing rights of way are important first steps. At Engine Ventures, we are proud to support VEIR, which has developed a technology that amplifies transmission capabilities in existing corridors by 5x. As a member of the Advancing Modern Power Lines (AMP) Coalition, VEIR has been instrumental in advocating for these rule changes. Congratulations to Tim Heidel and the entire VEIR team for their relentless efforts in advancing their mission. Their dedication and achievements fill me with optimism for our collective ability to meet the challenges ahead of us.
