  • Congratulations to the 2024 Grantmakers In Health Terrance Keenan Institute for Emerging Leaders in Philanthropy class of fellows! The Terrance Keenan Institute is a professional leadership development opportunity for health philanthropy’s next generation leaders. It features a retreat-like format that includes a mix of structured discussions and unstructured networking. Health Foundation President & CEO Matthew Kuhlenbeck was part of the 2014 class of fellows -- returning 10 years later to serve as one of four faculty members in support of this year's class. • ⭐️ STAFF AND BOARD SPOTLIGHT ⭐️ Thank you to the NY Funders Alliance for hosting another engaging conference -- this year in Buffalo. NY Funders Alliance, an association of grantmakers and philanthropic advisors throughout the state, brought more than 150 funders together at this year's conference to learn, collaborate, and explore innovative solutions together. Health Foundation Program Officer Chiara Smith, MHR and Senior Program Officer Danette Campbell-Bell, in partnership with the Central New York Community Foundation conducted a pre-conference workshop: “Philanthropy’s Fight for Racial Equity: the Role of Power, Partnership and Participation. Grantee partner William Powell of The Player 1 Academy and the WE ARE 1 MOVEMENT, INC. joined us to discuss human centered design practices of participatory grantmaking, and strategies for better resourcing Black-led grassroots organizations, to deepen support of racialized and marginalized communities. OF NOTE: Health Foundation President & CEO Matthew Kuhlenbeck was reelected to a second term on the NY Funders Alliance Board of Directors and elected to serve a Chair of the Board of Directors starting in 2025!

  • ⭐️ PARTNER SPOTLIGHT ⭐️ A huge thank you to Nyla Gaylord from United Way of Orleans County for hosting Health Foundation Program Officer, Rachel Betts, M.A., on a recent tour of Orleans County! The day started with breakfast at Eagle Family Diner in Brockport, followed by a trip to Bullard Park, and a visit to the stunning Holley Canal Falls where they even saw salmon! Rachel and Nyla also stopped by GENESEE ORLEANS MINISTRY OF CONCERN INC, a Health Foundation grantee partner. Rachel explored housing in the area, visiting at a variety of affordable housing complexes, mobile home parks, and apartment units to better understand the community's needs. Fun fact: Did you know that Mt. Albion Cemetery features a tower honoring the 463 soldiers from Orleans County who lost their lives in the Civil War? If you visit - be sure to check out the view from the top for a breathtaking look at Lake Ontario! We’re grateful for the opportunity to deepen our understanding of Orleans County as a whole -- inclusive of the many distinct towns, villages, and hamlets in the area -- all with something unique to offer!

The Wayne County towns of Galen and Savannah, including the Village of Clyde and hamlet of Savannah, were the sites for this work. Over the past 11+ years, Project SOAR has empowered residents in these rural communities to work together and collaborate with organizations, businesses, and institutions to improve the health of the community.
