Mentors can provide tactical wisdom and emotional encouragement in a way that nobody else can... And they are incredibly valuable for anyone running an HR department of one. My advice? Seek them out. And commit to following through on your goals, so they know their time won't be wasted.

At wattsnextpx and The HR Linc we believe strongly that your HR Professional must have commercial acumen or be a commercial thinker. Why and what does that mean? Your HR person needs to think commercially because they're the ones who make sure your people and your business goals are on the same page. Being commercially aware means they understand how the business works and can shape HR strategies to help you succeed. They know the market, the competition, and industry trends, so they can come up with HR plans that actually boost your bottom line. They'll spot opportunities and challenges early on, helping you make smarter decisions and keeping your company innovative and adaptable. Basically, having a commercially savvy HR person means getting the most out of your team and driving your business forward. Stop thinking of your HR Pro or your HR function in general, as just a cost. It doesn't have to be that way if you think differently about the value you want to see from this department! For those who don't have a HR department as yet you should still have a HR strategy so you are making the right decisions to grow your business. Most mistakes in business happen due to people decisions!

One of the most scary challenges I have taken on since relocating to New York City was accepting the position of Chapter President for Entrepreneurs' Organization in NY. We recently had our mid year summit where we reflected on what we have achieved so far and what still needs to be done. My advice to anyone who has a scary challenge presented to them...say yes! This has been one of the most rewarding and growth experiences I have ever had. And it is still going!!!

If we're expecting our HR manager to "help the team upskill with AI"... A great first step is equipping them with training and examples of how to use AI in their own role! We can't teach what we haven't first learned ourselves. Especially when it's complicated technology. (We are closing this gap at The HR Linc, if they might be interested in one of our cohorts!)

It’s hard to teach something that we haven’t first learned personally. So, if we want our HR manager to be training others on leadership, mindfulness, goal setting, and artificial intelligence... The right starting point is to FIRST train them in each of these areas. Don’t have the time? That’s why we created The HR Linc
